Acer Asipre 5 (2019) A515-54G Laptop Review

The laptops They continue to be one of the most important markets for consumer electronics, despite the fact that they are starting to be sold less and less due to the progressive improvement that mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have suffered. If someone continues to bet on personal computers it is precisely steel, a firm from which we have been able to see quite a few similar products analyzed in our «reviews» section. Today we have in our hands the latest version of one of its sold models, we analyze the Acer Aspire 5 (2019), an all-rounder designed to be a balanced laptop and for all audiences.

Materials and design

This Acer Aspire 5 it is built in a balanced mix between plastic and metal, the upper part of the cover is made of metallic material, while the rest of the equipment, including the area of the keyboard where we put our hands, has a plastic composition. In certain aspects it gives a feeling of seriousness and good materials. It is designed to withstand the passage of time and continuous use. The design is quite minimalist, on the cover the brand's logo takes center stage we can buy it in blue, black and silver.

  • Size: 36.3 x 24.6 x 1.7 cm
  • Weight: 1,9 Kg

However, despite this, we are not facing a particularly thin laptop, nor a particularly light laptop. We find dimensions and weight that correspond to the materials used, the hardware that it houses inside and especially the lateral connections, which we find on the side and side, which it has. We also mention that we have a classic plug charging port, With an external power supply, so Acer has not opted for USB-C as a charging mechanism despite being a 2019 device, it would have been interesting to leave these pin chargers behind.

Technical Specifications

We turn now to the purely numerical, the "gross power", what we must stick to. We know that this data is not generally a reliable proof of the final performance, but we will detail the specifications of the unit tested.

As we can see, in general to this Acer Aspire 5 (2019) It lacks nothing, highlights its 5th generation Intel iXNUMX processor, although we take the opportunity to remember that it is a "U" model so we have low battery consumption, but it would need the Turbo Boost to get the most out of it. Not bad at all and more than enough for standard use by most clients.

Screen and multimedia

We are before a panel of 15,6 inches at Full HD resolution, It is a common LCD panel of what we usually find in this type of products. However, in this edition (at least in the model that we have tested), the firm has decided to bet on a VA panel, It is true that these panels offer better input lag in general, but it has the disadvantage that the viewing angles are quite poor, for those who are not used to an IPS panel on a laptop it may not be a negative point, but the angles vision are greatly affected.

For the sound Acer has decided Acer Aspire 5 - Computer ... It doesn't sound bad at all, it's powerful and clear, more than enough speakers for regular use. In terms of reproduction, the panel offers relatively good brightness without reaching striking heights, and a panel of well-adjusted colors and naturalness. It is also worth mentioning that in this panel we have a 60Hz refresh rate which is not bad at all (another advantage of using a VA panel). Honestly, the panel, since it is not IPS, has seemed its least remarkable point, although in everything else it offers good performance.

Connectivity, autonomy and user experience

Regarding connectivity, we do not lack absolutely anything, WiFi gives good performance, we have ports for everything you need and also an HDMI (finally a brand that insists on maintaining a protocol as common as this).

At the level of use, the keyboard seemed strange to me, the keys have a somewhat narrow design and the numeric keyboard is perhaps too compact, be that as it may, it is appreciated that it is included, which is not bad. The trackpad seems to me to be another weak point, but it is common to almost all brands, the trackpad is something that does not seem to advance too much in technological terms. Key travel is good and offers comfortable typing for everyday use.

Mixing the SSD with an HDD makes the computer flow and efficiently perform daily tasks of office automation with Microsoft Office 2016, few complaints with photo editing in Adobe Photoshop and something uphill is playing Fortnite, especially with Cities Skylines where it shows many more complaints and overheating. With the first tasks we easily reach four and a half hours of autonomy, gaming are drastically reduced, not surprisingly, by using the dedicated GPU.

Editor's opinion

We found a laptop that will be around 600 and 800 euros (LINK) depending on the model we choose. I am clear that we have cheaper options on the market and it is close to a "premium" sector against which it is difficult to compete, however, it offers a good value for money if we take into account the hardware that it mounts and that it does not. it lacks practically nothing.

Cons

  • Low viewing angle VA panel
  • A mediocre trackpad
  • The charging port is standard

I liked it the size of the device and the fact that it includes a good handful of features that make it an interesting option. It is also well designed and comfortable, including a numeric keypad and a large screen.

Pros

  • Good materials, good design and well built
  • No hardware-level features are missing
  • It is not very thin or very light but it is comfortable

We also found negative points, such as a mediocre trackpad, a VA screen with a low viewing angle and an autonomy that is clearly impaired with the use of video games.
