ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551, it's gaming and it's premium [Analysis]

We do not always have the opportunity to analyze and observe such groundbreaking devices. This time it will remind you inevitably to the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo a device that we have also analyzed here at Actualidad Gadget and from which this Zephyrus Duo draws directly in terms of design, but as always, adapted to the Republic of Gamers audience.

We take an in-depth look at the new ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo, a dual-screen gaming laptop with scandal hardware, does it deliver what it promises? That is precisely what we want to analyze in this laptop that is offered as a unique and special alternative on the market.

A unique and unmatched design

The first thing that caught our attention is its design, although we have found a reasonable resemblance, as we have already mentioned, with its brother in the standard consumer version the Zenbook Duo, it has its own character. Certainly compared to the previous version there is not much change, however the back cover has the classic micro-perforations typical of Republic of Gamers products and its aggressive lines, in this section the construction gives a feeling of robustness and above all of quality, ASUS has always been an expert manufacturer in these aspects and this product was not going to be less.

  • Size: 360 x 268 x 20,9 mm
  • Weight: 2,48 Kilograms

It is not excessively thick if we take into account everything that it is composed of, however, it houses a sufficient level of connectivity. The "double" screen rises to a more comfortable position as long as we use the device, something that I think is essential. Curious is also the location of the digital "trackpad" on the far right side, forced in this case by the reduced space for the keyboard, which in turn has enough travel and RGB LED lighting up to expectations.

Technical characteristics

At the processor level this ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo It starts with an AMD processor, specifically the Ryzen 9 in its 5900HX version with a more than contrasted gaming performance, sacrificing temperatures. It is accompanied by 32 GB of DDR4 RAM at 3200 Mhz and finally, for storage there is nothing less than two 0TB NVMe RAID 1 solid state memories, obviously in this device no hardware has been spared and it could be said that ASUS ROG has thrown all the meat on the grill, it is difficult to find similar devices.

The GPU is not far behind, we have a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 130W and with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, One of the top graphics cards on the market, launched at the beginning of 2021 in a specific model for laptops, we could say that it is one of the best alternatives available on the market. Regarding the speed of data processing, its double NVMe SSD in RAID 0 exceeds 7 GB / s transfer speed (slightly more than half in writing). On a technical level, we are facing one of the most versatile and powerful laptops that we can find in the market, and that It has a price, if you are thinking of buying it you can buy it on Amazon with the best offer.

Plentiful connectivity

We start, as always, with the physical ports. We have a port in the back to gain comfort HDMI 2.0b in case we want to add a second monitor, as well as a port RJ45LAN and a leek USB-A 3.1. We also have a port on the sides USB-C 3.1DP+PD, accompanied by two other ports USB-A 3.1, a combined audio input and output connector and the power adapter which in this case is specific to this laptop. Of course, the USB-C port being Power Delivery will also provide us with energy in case we want it.

At the level of wireless connectivity, this Zephyrus Duo has also opted for the latest version in everything, we have WiFi 6 WiFi 6 (Gig +) (802.11ax) 2 × 2 RangeBoost and Bluetooth 5.1, Although we always recommend playing via cable and with DMZ Host for the computer's IP, the reality is that for games other than FPS this sixth generation WiFi guarantees latencies below 5ms and stable 600/600 connections according to our own tests. In this aspect we have not found technical problems, in fact the experience has been remarkably good.

An ideal panel and good multimedia experience

We have to start with a screen of 15,6 inches at 4K resolution for which it uses an IPS LCD panel well adjusted in terms of colors, without light leakage and with a good coating to avoid unwanted reflections. It has a refresh rate of 120 Hz that makes our delights playing, yes, it lacks a Webcam something that is difficult to understand in a laptop like this, why ASUS?

  • Imput LAG: Maximum 3ms
  • 132% sRGB
  • 100% Adobe
  • FreeSync
  • Pantone Validated
  • Stylus holder

For his part, ScreenPad Plus is 14,1 inches and obviously it is tactile, we can work with it, take notes or use it as an extension of the desktop. It has 3840 pixels horizontally and has an automatic lifting system by raising the lid of the laptop that improves ventilation significantly.

For its part, it has two 4W speakers with Smart Amp and 2 2W tweeters, making it immediately one of the best laptops when it comes to sound, second only to Apple's MacBooks. It has support for Dolby Atmos audio as well as intelligent amplification technology.

  • Aura Sync for RGB lighting

Regarding autonomy, we have a system of 4-cell Li-ion (90 WHrs, 4S1P) that although it will be enough for more than three or four hours of office automation, the tests we perform while playing will depend on the performance in question. It is not worth dwelling too much on this aspect as much as it is recommended to play online.

Editor's opinion

Obviously this laptop is a safe and simple bet, but for that you must go through the box, the more than 2.900 euros it costs on sale they are worth every gram of this laptop that seems as simple as taking the best of each house and putting it together in a beautiful and efficient chassis.
