There are many reasons why a user might consider changing their name on Skype. For example, to be able to use the popular video call application in different areas (for work, with friends, with family) or simply because we have grown tired of our name or nickname and we want a new one. The first time we sign up for Skype, it is the platform itself that automatically assigns us an account name. It is what is known as "Skype name". This name is assigned to our account is permanent and it is not possible to change it in any way. Does this mean that there is nothing to do? Actually, something can be done. We explain it below:

To make this change to the Skype web version (regardless of whether it is Windows or MacOs) these are the steps to follow:
- First of all, we launch the Skype application on our computer.
- After we click on the icon of our profile, which is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.
- In the menu that appears later, we select "My account".
- Within the following menu, we choose the option "Profile" and then "Edit profile".
- There we go to the section "Personal information" and click on the field "Number", in which we will write our new name.
- Finally, click on the button "Save" to confirm the name change.
With these simple steps we will not be able to change the username in Skype, although we will be able to change the name with which everyone will see us on the platform. This change will reflect on all devices where we use the same Skype account.
On a phone or tablet
The steps below are for changing the display name on Android phones and tablets, as well as Apple devices like iPhone or iPad:
- To begin with, we start the Skype application on our phone.
- Once there, click on the profile icon, which is at the top of the screen.
- In the menu that opens, we select "Skype profile."
- A new window with the profile then opens. In it you have to click on the pencil icon to edit its content.
- In the countryside "Number" we enter our new display name and click the check mark icon.

Create a new Skype account
In some cases, instead of changing the display, it is much more advisable create a new account. For example, it is a good idea for users who want to start using Skype for professional or business purposes.
If we decide on this option, it is convenient not delete our old account. If we do, we will also be deleting our Microsoft account associated with it, which is surely not what we are looking for. It is better to create a second Skype account, for which we will need a second available Microsoft account.
