Crosscall Trekker-X4 an off-road smartphone

We are here once again with a "ruguerizado" device, that is, one of those mobile devices that are designed to withstand whatever we throw at it. cross call is a firm that is working in this sector and we have previously analyzed some of their smartphones.

This time we put on the analysis table his latest release, the Crosscall Trekker-X4, a phone that includes an action-cam so you can keep a nice memory in any situation. Discover with us all the details of the new Crosscall Trekker-x4 thanks to this in-depth test where we will see all its strengths and weaknesses.

Materials and design

We start with the external appearance of the device, how could it be otherwise it feels rough, strong and heavy. This is the only way to reach levels of protection and resistance, impossible to achieve in other terms. We are facing a device with prominent frames and a total size of 162,6 x 82 x 12,85 mm for a weight of no less than 250 grams. Of course it is not the best travel companion for day to day if you plan to carry it in your pocket. However, this has not been a particularly negative point.

  • Size: 162,6 x 82 x 12,85 mm
  • Weight: 250 grams

With its numerous buttons and non-slip materials we have been able to use it without fear of slipping and obviously without any type of protective casing. The phone is designed in a matte black color that repels fingerprints on the chassis well, not on the front glass. Two buttons on the right side, one of them being the fingerprint reader, well located. For the left side two other volume buttons. Definitely the design is what you would expect from a device with these characteristics, so we are faced with what is a standard phone in this range.

Technical characteristics

We go to the heart, once again Crosscall bets on the mid-range of processors from Qualcomm, in this case the Snapdragon 660 that leaves other devices of the company far behind. Finally, the firm is committed to a performance more up to par, we understand that forced by the needs of the sensors assigned to the cameras. We have 4GB of RAM to close the loop and the Adreno 512 GPU.

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Octa Core 2,2 GHz
  • RAM: 4GB LPDDR4X
  • GPU: Adreno 512
  • Storage: 64 GB eMMC 5.1 (expandable microSD up to 512GB)
  • Chambers:
    • Rear: Dual 386MP SONY IMX12 sensor and 170º Wide Angle
    • Front: 8MP
  • Battery: 4.400 mAh with Quick Charge 3.0 and X-Link connection
  • Connectivity: USB-C, FM Radio, WiFI NU-MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and NFC

It stands out for being quite complete, we miss a perhaps somewhat more advanced storage, since leMMC 5.1 memory could weigh down the performance of a good RAM memory and a good processor, although we have not appreciated it in daily use. As I just said, the overall performance is pretty good, actually the best in the Crosscall range of devices we've been able to test so far, but considering the price of the device we could not expect less.

Connectivity and sensors

In terms of connectivity we also have the most cutting edge of Crosscall to date, we bet on the NFC, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS. Of course, we will not miss anything, even a USB-C port that has OTG capacity, despite the fact that it does not have a video output. It would have been interesting considering that the Trekker-X4 has an action cam. But they are not the only sensors it has, we have many more:

  • Gravity sensor.
  • Gyroscope.
  • Compass.
  • Accelerometer
  • Light sensor.
  • Barometer.
  • Thermometer.
  • Hygrometer.
  • Altimeter.
  • UV sensor (ultraviolet rays).

Of course, few devices will you find in the market with this list of sensors. It is definitely intended for those who perform risky sports or in adverse conditions, to whom this type of information that the Crosscall Trekker-X4 is capable of obtaining. Yes, I would have missed an interface that would expose this data in a lighter and better ordered way, a more polished software in this regard, and not so limited by the incomprehensible bet that Crosscall has made in this device for the Android 8.1 that it runs.

Cameras and multimedia experience

We are in the rear with a double sensor. The first a Sony MIX386 of 12MP (f / 1.8 of 88º) and an accompaniment of other 12MP but with a Wide Angle of up to 170º, undoubtedly designed for capturing great landscapes and as much information as possible. They are capable of recording video in resolutionn 4K at 60 FPS or FullHD slow motion at 120 FPS. For the rest we have an electronic stabilizer in the main one and a 5x digital zoom.

The front only 8MP without any "boast". A standard photo shoot, without much processing and pleasant to take.

For its part we have a 5,5 inch IPS panel with a resolution 1920 x 1080, so we slightly exceed the FullHD. This offers a total of 401 PP And how could it be otherwise, this screen has other common features in Crosscall such as the possibility of using it while wet and with gloves. We have an average sound, and a brightness that allows us to use it outdoors without problems, but that does not stand out in any way either. The panel is well adjusted and offers well saturated and highly differential colors.

Autonomy and editor's opinion

We have a battery of 4.400 mAh that allows us a 24W fast charge whose charger is included in the package (together with a waterproof IPX6 headphones). It offers us normal performance, a charge more than enough for between 12 and 13 hours of use.

Regarding the final opinion, we are faced with a device that fulfills what it promises but that also makes it clear in the price, in which it rubs shoulders with the high-end of other brands. The price is one reason why it does not seem so logical to bet on Android 8.1 in the operating system, although the list of sensors and hardware may perhaps compensate for it. You can get it from 646 euros on Amazon (LINK).
