But as is always the case with these types of products, the spec sheet only tells part of the story. What's important is whether it's convenient for everyday use, whether it cleans well without constantly requiring turbo mode, whether the accessories are useful, and whether that foldable design offers any real benefit or is just a gimmick for show.
Dreame's proposition here is quite clear: a powerful, relatively lightweight vacuum cleaner with some practical solutions for those who clean frequently, have pets, or simply want to ditch the traditional canister vacuum. It's not an entry-level model, but it's not outrageously expensive either, considering what it offers. And that puts it in a very interesting position, especially for those looking for a serious alternative without venturing into the realm of the most expensive brands.
Design and ergonomics
In terms of build quality, the Dreame R20 Pro-A conveys the brand's usual feel: well-fitted plastic, a compact body, and a modern design without too many frills. It doesn't look like a cheap product, which is appreciated because a cordless vacuum cleaner is constantly being handled, set down, disassembled, and emptied. Everything has to fit together perfectly, because any looseness will eventually become annoying.
The main body weighs 1,76 kg, a fairly reasonable figure for a vacuum cleaner of this power. It's not lightweight, especially when using the tube and main brush for extended periods, but it's not excessively tiring either. The weight is noticeably concentrated at the top, as is the case with almost all vacuum cleaners of this type, so cleaning ceilings, high corners, or curtains can tire your arm a little. On floors, however, it handles quite naturally.
The key difference lies in the 90-degree folding extension wand. It might seem trivial until you try to clean under a bed, a low sofa, or a TV stand. With a conventional vacuum cleaner, you have to bend down, strain your wrist, or resign yourself to the fact that a small dust colony will form underneath. Here, the articulated wand allows you to reach those areas with less effort, and it's one of those features that doesn't immediately grab your attention like power, but that you'll probably end up using more than you expected.
The LED screen is also helpful. It's not a "smart" screen in the extreme sense of the word, but it does provide the information that really matters: cleaning mode, battery level, blockage alerts, high temperature, or the need to check the filter. With this type of product, I prefer a simple and clear screen to a panel full of icons that no one ever looks at.
Power and cleaning capacity

In real-world use, this means a vacuum cleaner with enough power to clean hard floors, thin carpets, crumbs, accumulated dust, and pet hair without constantly needing the most powerful setting. This is important because many vacuum cleaners boast high figures, but in everyday use, they only truly clean when you activate turbo mode, and then the battery drains rapidly.
We have an Eco mode for daily maintenance: visible dust, light lint, loose hair, and surface dirt. For a quick clean in the living room or bedroom, it's more than enough, especially if you don't let dirt accumulate for days. Auto mode is probably the most recommended for almost everyone because it adjusts the power according to the amount of dirt detected. When it finds more dirt, it increases the intensity; when the floor is cleaner, it reduces the motor's power. It's a very convenient way to avoid having to manually switch modes all the time.
Turbo mode, on the other hand, is for specific situations: carpets, sand, heavier debris, or areas where dirt has accumulated. It cleans more powerfully, but also consumes significantly more battery power and generates more noise. This isn't unique to Dreame; it's the reality of any powerful cordless vacuum cleaner. Turbo mode is a nice feature, but it's not advisable to buy a vacuum cleaner expecting to use it constantly.
The TangleCut multi-surface brush is one of the most interesting features. Its function is to actively cut hairs to reduce tangles in the roller. Anyone with pets or people with long hair at home knows exactly what this means: stopping, getting out scissors, cutting through trapped clumps, and cleaning the roller as if it were an unpleasant chore. This system isn't a miracle worker, because with a lot of hair there will always be some maintenance, but it should significantly reduce that task. And in a frequently used vacuum cleaner, every minute saved cleaning the brush itself counts.
In addition, the 140-degree CelesTect LED lighting (inherited from brands like Dyson) is another feature that sounds more impressive than it actually is, but it makes perfect sense. The light helps you see fine dust, hair, and particles that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye, especially on hard floors, in corners, and in dimly lit areas. Once you try a vacuum cleaner with a front light, it's hard to go back. It also has a curious side effect: it makes you realize your house was less clean than you thought.
Autonomy and maintenance
The maximum stated runtime is up to 90 minutes, but that figure should be taken with a grain of salt. As is usually the case, that time will be achieved under ideal conditions, with low power and probably without the most demanding motorized brush. In real-world use, alternating modes and cleaning with the main brush, you can expect considerably less. Even so, the 8-cell, 2900 mAh battery offers enough power for a complete cleaning in medium or even large apartments if you use Auto mode properly.
The dustbin has a 0,6-liter capacity, which is adequate for a cordless vacuum of this size. It's not huge, but it allows you to clean several rooms without having to empty it constantly. The push-button emptying system helps you avoid touching the dirt, although, as is typical with these designs, if you're vacuuming a lot of hair or compacted lint, you might need to tap it a few times or use a little manual assistance to get everything to fall out properly.
Dreame also incorporates five-layer filtration with an advertised efficiency of 99,9% for particles as small as 0,3 microns. This is especially useful in homes with fine dust, pets, or sensitive individuals, although it doesn't replace regular filter cleaning. And here's the less glamorous part: for a vacuum cleaner to maintain its power, the filters, roller, and ducts need to be cared for. The R20 Pro-A allows you to remove and wash components like the filter and roller, which makes maintenance much easier, but it doesn't eliminate it. Anyone looking for zero maintenance is looking at the wrong product category.

It doesn't try to impress solely with specs, although it does have them, but rather adds practical solutions that are noticeable in daily use: the foldable tube for cleaning without straining your back, the TangleCut brush for easier pet hair removal, the CelesTect light for better dust visibility, and the automatic mode so you don't have to change power every two minutes.
Its weaknesses are the usual ones for this category. Maximum battery life should be approached with caution, turbo mode isn't designed for continuous cleaning, and filter and roller maintenance is still necessary. It's not the cheapest vacuum cleaner on the market either, but considering what it offers, the official (discounted) price of €299 puts it in a fairly competitive position.
