How to change rows by columns in Microsoft Excel

When making any type of graph (based on variable data), probability statistics, audits, searches between different sheets, looking for average values ... or simply a table where we expose the data we want to organize, Microsoft Excel is the best solution on the market today. And for the moment, it will continue to be so for many years.

Although it is true that in the market we can find various completely free alternatives, like Libre Office or Apple Numbers, the number of complex functions is not close to those offered by Excel. Creating tables in Excel to turn them into a graph is a very simple process. What if we don't like the result of the graph? The best option in these cases is to swap the rows for the columns.

Although it may seem silly, if we change the information of the rows for that of the columns, the resulting graph can be much easier to understand, not only for us, but also for those who have to read the document in question. Things can get complicated, when the number of rows and columns is very high, since it can take us a lot of time, unless we make use of the function that Excel offers us to do it automatically.

  • First, we must select the table from which we want to invert the rows by the columns. To do this, we just have to click with the mouse on the first cell where the titles of the data of the column and row that we want to exchange converge and take it to the last value of the table.
  • Next, we hover over the selection with the mouse and right-click to copy content to clipboard.
  • Next, we go to the cell where we want to create a new table with the rows and columns reversed and we place the mouse where we want the table to start. At this time, we must go to the top of the Excel menu and click on the inverted triangle displayed on the Paste button. This option offers us the special gluing options that the application offers us.
  • To be able to paste the content, but changing the rows by the columns, we must click on Transpose.

If you've ever wondered what the Transpose option was for, you already have the answer. As we can in the image that heads this article, this function will be in charge of moving the values of the columns and rows so that they are adapt to our distribution that we have made.
