Although this version of the Microsoft operating system officially said goodbye in 2017, there are still many computers around the world that continue to work with it. For those who still have it, some information about Vista still matters. For example, knowing what to do to format Windows Vista.

The most common reason that leads us to make the decision to format a computer is the accumulation of huge amounts of information, which translates into a greater risk of viruses and other guests installing on our computer.

How do we know when the time has come? format the hard drive of our computer? The most alarming and irritating symptom is that everything is slowing down. So much so that there comes a time when we can practically do nothing. It is time to act.

In this post we will explain the process step by step. Before we start, we have to take the precaution of having a external hard drive, in which we will make the necessary backup copy before proceeding with the formatting.

To preserve information that we do not want to lose. To do this, we will connect the external hard drive to the computer that we have referred to before to the computer and we will copy all the files to it one by one. It is a slow procedure, but the most advisable to avoid viruses.

Windows Vista Format Tool

One good thing about Windows Vista is that it has its own formatting option, which saves us a lot of work when it comes to carrying out this task. To access it you have to follow these steps:

  1. First we go to Start and from there to Control Panel.
  2. There we select the option "System and Maintenance" and, in the next menu, "Management tools".
  3. Then we select "Team management" *
  4. In the new navigation panel that opens, we select the option Disk Management.
  5. The different storage volumes of the computer will appear on the screen. We have to click with the right mouse button on the one we want to format. It's usually C:
  6. The last step is to choose between custom formatting or default formatting. The latter is the most recommended. After choosing it, click on "To accept" and the process will start.

(*) On some occasions, after double-clicking on "Computer management" the system will ask us for the administrator password or it will ask us if we are sure to continue. In these cases, you will have to enter the password and click on "Accept" to continue.

Format Windows Vista with the installation disk

In case we still have the Operating system installation CD or a flash drive with the ISO image of it, the process can be even simpler. If not, you can still try to extract the Vista DVD ISO image if your computer is equipped with an optical drive. If not, there is no legal way to get the ISO, as Windows Vista is currently an outdated operating system.

Another thing to do before starting the process is to make sure to change the boot order of the devices of our computer. In other words: the CD / DVD player or the USB port in which we are going to connect the flash drive must start before the hard drive on which Windows Vista is installed. For that, we have to make the necessary modifications in the BIOS.

After checking all of the above, the steps to follow are the following:

  1. We insert the disk in the CD/DVD drive connected to our computer.
  2. Then we restart Windows.
  3. When the first text appears on the screen, we press any key to start the operating system installation process.
  4. After a few seconds, the first screen of the Windows Vista disc (where the language selection option is shown) will appear. We click on "Install", which will launch the operating system installation wizard.
  5. We enter the product key of our copy of Windows Vista and click on the button "Ahead".
  6. At this point you have to insert check mark and check the option of acceptance of the license conditions. Then we choose the version of Windows Vista that we want to use and click on the hard drive that we want to format.
  7. After pressing the button «OK», the new Windows Vista installation process will start, after which we will have to restart the computer a second time.

By way of conclusion, we will say that formatting Windows Vista is possible, although it makes little sense. This version is now obsolete, so it will always be better to forget about it and install Windows 10 or Windows 11.
