How to open ports and improve your connection in video games

Great video games like Fortnite, Call of Duty: War Zone or PUBG Among others, they are basing their success precisely on the fact that they are totally free. However, since they require a good handful of users playing at the same time and in some cases even corssplay, that is, different platforms play in a single scenario. This makes the quality of the connection especially important in these types of games where every second counts. We explain how you can use the DMZ Host to open all ports and significantly improve the quality of your connection when playing video games. You will be able to test your skills easily.

What is DMZ Host and what is it for?

When we pass content through our router it goes through a series of filters that make our connection and day by day more secure. This obviously generates "ping" or what video game users sometimes refer to as "lag." We will not necessarily find this impediment in all cases, but almost always the DMZ helps to make the connection faster and therefore improve our video game experience, especially now that many users are connected to the same network and that we have so many devices with WiFi at home.

The function DMZ allows a direct connection between the internal and external network. When we assign the FMZ to an IP we can work faster since all ports are completely open by default (except for some that the operator or manufacturer reserves). In theory, the DMZ carries a series of security risks but we remember that in this case we are only going to focus on connections for video games, which therefore they will work simultaneously with our game console so we should be somewhat limited in terms of causing security errors.

How to set the DMZ to improve lag

It is important that to use the DMZ correctly it is recommended to have a connection via LAN cable.

The first thing we will need is to access the router configuration, for this we will enter one of these two addresses in the web browser of our mobile phone or PC:

  • http://192.168.0.1 > Algunos routers de otras compañías como Vodafone, Orange, Jazztel…etc.
  • http://192.168.1.1 > Routers de Movistar.

The most common is that it asks us for a username and password to access our company's router, These data are at the base of our router, although generally they can be the following:

  • admin / admin
  • 1234/1234
  • admin / 1234
  • 1234 / admin
  • password / password
  • admin / password
  • root / root
  • superuser / superuser

Once inside, we are going to look for the "advanced configuration" option or similar to be able to access the traditional router interface. When we have managed to access we follow the following route: Advanced Setup> NAT> DMZ Host.

Here we will see a content box in which we will have to assign an IP, for this we will assign a free IP that matches the number used to access, it is recommended to assign 192.168.1.XX where "XX" will be the IP of your game console, Later on we will teach you how to assign your console a fixed IP so that the DMZ always matches the game console. Once we have assigned an IP, click on "Save / Apply" and we have the DMZ activated.

How to assign DMZ to your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One

Assign fixed IP to our PS4

We go to the Settings section and follow the following path: Network> Configure Internet connection. I recommend that you go to Settings> Network> Connection status and take notes or a photograph of the data in case you have to reverse the situation.

  1. How do you want to connect to the network? > We choose our option
  2. How do you want to configure the internet connection? >
  3. IP address settings> Manual
  4. In the following table we will enter the data
    1. Our fixed DMZ IP: 192.168.1.xx / 192.168.0.xx
    2. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    3. Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 / 192.168.1.1
    4. Primary DNS: 80.58.61.250
    5. Secondary DNS: 80.58.61.254
  5. MTU setting> Automatic
  6. Proxy Server> Do not use
  7. Test internet connection

Now we verify that the connection is correct, we wait for it to give us a result of «NAT 2» and a good connection speed according to the speed that we have contracted. Now it will always connect to the DMZ automatically.

Assign Fixed IP to Xbox One

In the General, Select Network Settings and then Advanced Options take notes or photographs of the information displayed before we proceed to assign a fixed IP to our Xbox.

  1. IP settings> Manual
  2. In the following table we will enter the data
    1. Our fixed DMZ IP: 192.168.1.xx / 192.168.0.xx
    2. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    3. Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 / 192.168.1.1
    4. Primary DNS: 80.58.61.250
    5. Secondary DNS: 80.58.61.254
  3. Press «B» to go back to the Network Settings screen and it will automatically check the internet connection

It is important that all the correct data is displayed so you must make sure that you enter it correctly. Nor nothing happens if we fail because we can always reset the network settings automatically and it will fix any errors.

How to improve my connection in video games

We are going to leave you here some tips so that you can improve your connection in video games and thus make the most of your leisure hours wherever you are:

Ps4 warzone

  1. Check if your operator has a «game mode», To do this, call customer service or check the configuration of your router looking for this mode, which is often called "Fast Path".
  2. Ideally, to avoid losing information and minimize LAG is always to use a cable connection, WiFi is unstable and saturates easily, if you can connect your game console by cable you will always get better results.
  3. Try to freeze or limit downloads you're doing while playing video games, bandwidth downloads saturate the router.
  4. Minimize the number of devices that are connected to your network via WiFi.

It is also possible that you are simply quite unskilled in this video game and the connection is just the excuse that you put often when you do a "Quick" in Call of Duty, for that we do not have a solution at present, you only have to practice, practice and practice.
