How to record your group video calls

Zoom

Right now we can be making the largest number of video calls since they exist. Whether for work, with friends, family or similar, video calls have become very important for many people. The coronavirus is causing the use of these video calls to increase significantly and work meetings or even those moments of celebrating a birthday of a friend, family member, etc., can be important to us and we want to record them.

Well today we are going to see how you can make recordings of some video calls that we make with the different applications that we have available or even with FaceTime, yes, you can record video calls made from Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp or even from Google Meet. In short, there are many services available right now to make these video calls whatever they are and to be able to record them.

FaceTime

We will start by recording on iOS with FaceTime

Yes, Apple long ago added the option in iOS to record the screen but this function does not allow recording the audio so we will have to use a Mac in addition to the iPhone or iPad itself through the Lightning cable. To record this FaceTime we simply have to connect the USB to our Mac and follow the steps:

  • Open the QuickTime application
  • Click on File and then on New Recording
  • At this point we choose the iPhone or iPad in the Camera section
  • Now we simply have to click on the red button and the video call will start recording

This option adds a Mac for it and if you want they could even record a call directly from WhatsApp or any other application that we use with our iOS device with this same method. The Mac will capture everything including the audio of the video call so once recorded we simply have to save the clip and that's it.

Google Meet

Record a video call on Google Meet

The Google Meet service does allow recordings of these video calls but it is not free. This function would be directly linked to the services G Suite Enterprise y G Suite Enterprise for Education So it is possible that many of you only have the free option and this will not work for you.

But for those who do have a paid service, they can record calls directly by following these steps. It is simple and in this case when we open the PC or Mac we will start the session and then join the video call and follow the steps.

  • We will click on the More menu, which are the three vertical points
  • The option to Record the meeting will appear
  • Click on it and we will start recording
  • At the end we click on Stop recording

Once finished the file will be saved on Google Drive inside the Meet folder. In this case and as we said at the beginning, it is possible that this service does not appear in your options menu and this is because the administrator himself has restricted recordings or that we do not directly have this service that is exclusive to G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education.

Zoom

Video calls recorded in Zoom

Zoom is one of the most used tools in this Covid-19 crisis. Without a doubt, the security problems they had at the beginning seem to be solved and Zoom continues to grow in users as the days go by. In this case, the Zoom video call recordings are stored directly on our equipment, there is no free cloud service so it is a local recording in all free accounts so it will be necessary to checkout if you want your recording of a video call to be stored in the cloud.

To make a recording in Zoom we also have to look in the configuration options of the tool and follow a few simple steps. In this case, the first thing to do is activate the function and for this we will press on the Account settings about the option Recording and later we will click on the option Local recording.

  • Now we start the video call
  • Click on the Burn option
  • We choose the Local recording option
  • Once we finish we stop the recording

The stored document can be found in the Zoom folder inside your PC or Mac. This file is located in the Documents folder and you can see the recording in Mp4 or M4A format from any player.

Skype login

Record Skype video calls

Finally one of the best known tools for those who already used video calls before the boom that these services have suffered, Skype. In this case, the smartphone app also allows us to directly make a recording of the video call and we simply have to click on the option «Start recording»Found in Settings at the top.

It is simple and fast and the recordings are stored directly in our chat history in a period of 30 days, after this time the recording is deleted automatically. It's the same from a PC or Mac, we just have to click on the settings and click on start recording.

Meet Now - Skype

As you can see in almost all cases the applications themselves have the option available to record the video call. Finding the options for it is simple and does not suppose a complication except in the case of iOS with FaceTime that requires a Mac to record video calls.

It is important to say that most applications show at all times that the video call is being recorded, but in the case of iOS with FaceTime it does not appear. It goes without saying that in terms of people's privacy, consent is required to make or share these recordings and that this in our country has quite restrictive legislation. This data should not be shared without the prior consent of all the participants of a video call as it can behave legal problems for privacy issues.
