iPhone 12 Pro VS Huawei P40 Pro, which one has the best camera?

The colleagues of iPhone News recently analyzed the new iPhone 12 Pro, a device from the Cupertino company that comes to innovate with striking features and a very renewed design. However, we have been testing the Huawei P40 Pro for a long time, which was a top device in terms of camera on the market.

We bring you the definitive comparison of cameras between the iPhone 12 Pro and the Huawei P40 Pro, two of the best mobile cameras on the market, which one will be the winner? Find out in our in-depth test with great detail in which we will see all the similarities and differences.

Sensors in detail

We start with the iPhone camera, we find a triple sensor with a quite striking island. Further, iPhone 12 Pro has a LiDAR system highlighted that for now marks the differences in terms of the use of this technology, are the differences really noticeable?

Specifically at the rear of the iPhone 12 Pro we have the following:

  • 12 MP Wide Angle and f / 2.4 aperture.
  • 12 MP standard and f / 1.6 aperture.
  • Telephoto (Zoom x2): 52mm focal length with f / 2.0 aperture, six elements in the lens, four hybrid powers and optical stabilization.

We now go to the Huawei P40 Pro, in which we have four sensors that have been able to defend themselves very well from the beginning and thus have obtained the best scores in most analyzes. This is the rear camera group:

  • 50MP f / 1.9 RYYB sensor
  • 40MP f / 1.8 Ultra Wide Angle
  • 8MP telephoto with 5x zoom
  • ToF 3D sensor

At the numerical level, everything seems quite clear, in this regard the Huawei P40 Pro takes the lead notably and on paper it should obtain better results. However, we already know that in this technology, numbers are not everything.

Main sensor test

Let's start with the main sensor, where we are the 12 MP of the iPhone 12 Pro accompanied by an aperture f / 1.6 compared to the not inconsiderable 50 MP of the Huawei P40 Pro with aperture f / 1.9, notable differences in this regard.

In the first place we have photographs in rainy conditions. Here we see how the P40 Pro offers us a slightly more saturated image, although it ends up burning the sky evenly. For its part, the iPhone 12 Pro offers more yellowish tones (a classic), being more respectful of the original colors and significantly better defining the clouds by capturing color differences.

In normal photographs we find that both define the sky well, somewhat bluer in the case of the iPhone 12 Pro and yes, capturing more light by offering a little more definition in the image. For its part, the Huawei P40 Pro offers somewhat more vivid and generally bluish colors.

If we talk about the liveliness of the colors it is clear that the Huawei P40 Pro does more work, however, it gives me the impression that the iPhone offers more reliable content in terms of what we are really talking about.

Wide Angle Test

We now go to the Wide Angle where the iPhone offers a sensor practically identical to the main one, that becomes 12 MP f / 2.4 aperture while the Huawei P40 Pro goes to a 40MP f / 1.8 Ultra Wide Angle sensor, being in this case that it will inevitably offer better results.

Here we find a notable difference. Although technically the Ultra Wide Angle of the Huawei P40 Pro is superior, we see that the photographs of the iPhone 12 Pro show more content (capture more image). Unlike with the main sensor, in the iPhone 12 Pro we find the colors more saturated than in the Huawei P40 Pro, something that has surprised us.

The aberration of the Wide Angle that yes, is much more noticeable in the iPhone than in the Huawei, which does a better job of processing. However, the lighting contrast is a factor in which the iPhone 12 defends itself somewhat better. Despite this, both cameras produce truly spectacular results. In this aspect, we are leaving you the original photographs, without retouching or cutting so that you can decide which one you like the most, and in this matter of photography we already know that decisions are very subjective.

Telephoto test

We are now talking about the Zoom. In this case we find in the iPhone 12 Pro a Telephoto (Zoom x2): 52mm focal length with f / 2.0 aperture, six elements in the lens, four hybrid magnifications and optical stabilization. In the case of the Huawei P40 Pro, an 8MP Telephoto with 5x zoom. At the level of scope and definition we have it quite clear, the Huawei P40 Pro takes all the successes.

Although the Zoom x5 is quite useful in many situations, it brings a plus of versatility to the Huawei P40 Pro camera that we are hardly going to obtain with a Zoom x2 in the case of the iPhone 12 Pro, although we remember that we will get a hybrid zoom x5. However, when enlarging we will find much more grain and defect in the iPhone 12 Pro photograph, obviously.

Referring to the selfie, the Huawei P40 Pro continues to have "problems" as it happens with devices of Asian origin, a "beauty effect" too marked for Western tastes. We also leave some photographs in "Macro" format where the Huawei P40 Pro beats the iPhone 12 Pro by far.

Photography in Night Mode, portrait and video

Here we leave some shots in «Night mode», and a mix of some other photos so that you can discern for yourself which one offers the best performance for your needs. Both rank hands down as two of the best night photography phones on the market. Regarding the Portrait Mode, we do not find great benefits in LiDAR and they are quite even.

As for the video, we have left you at the top our YouTube channel where all this comparison of cameras We have been able to perform it with both cameras and you are going to test tests in real recording performance of both devices, where the iPhone 12 Pro continues to be the leader in terms of stabilization.
