Motorola Sonic Boost, wireless speaker with Alexa at low cost

Lately, many devices that have compatibility or features related to Alexa pass through our hands. Many of you have dreamed of having the Alexa functionalities on wireless speakers and efficiently, and it seems that Motorola has taken notice.

We have in our hands the Motorola Sonic Boost 210, a wireless speaker that has Alexa and Google Assistant from 25 euros. At first it seems like a very interesting product, so you should stay with us to discover our in-depth analysis in which you will find its main features, its price and everything that this peculiar Motorola “smart” speaker is capable of.

As always, we are going to go section by section to find everything that catches our attention as well as its main strengths, without forgetting of course also what are the weak points of this peculiar speaker. For all this we want you to accompany us once again to the analysis that we offer you. Take a look at this Amazon link.

Design and materials: Minimal but resistant

It's time to talk about design, and we basically have a square with rounded corners, made with a frame and a polycarbonate back with a rubbery touch, on our table we have been able to enjoy the model in red, although you can buy it at an interesting range: Red, black, white, sky blue and yellow. A design and a casual color, definitely to approach the younger audience, a clear indication by the Chinese brand. We find measures of 8 cm high, 8 cm long and 3,5 centimeters thick for a total weight of 122 grams, it is light and quite portable in almost any situation, Although personally, and after my experience doing sound product analysis, I tend to be quite suspicious of "light weight" speakers, however, we will continue to proceed with the analysis, we will talk about sound later.

  • Size: 8 x 8 x 3,5 centimeters
  • Weight: 122 grams
  • Colors: Red, black, white, sky blue and yellow

We are at the top with a Play / Pause button, two volume buttons and a dedicated button for the microphone that manages the voice assistant. On the front we find acoustic fabric and the Motorla logo in silver. Meanwhile, for the right side all the connections remain: microUSB, AUX and a reset button. The same corner of this side has a hole that will allow us to add a strap, so we can easily transport it, a detail that not all speakers include and that is greatly appreciated. Finally, the back also has an engraving of "Motorola" and at the base we have four small rubber pads that will provide stability to the equipment.

Audio quality, connection and autonomy

The device is a "pocket" loudspeaker, something that we must bear in mind at all times. I have not gotten exact information about the size or power of the speaker it includes, what we do know is that it lacks any type of passive bass radiator and it shows. Despite this, it offers a fairly clear sound almost in any situation, by this I mean, despite being at the highest levels of the volume that it is capable of offering, the music will be emitted in a stable way and without loss or noise, And that is quite welcome in a device like this, however, perhaps this correct "tuning" is what affects its power, the absence of bass means that we can miss a little more "brutality" in it, without obviously forgetting that its size gives what it gives. That is to say, a perfect companion speaker, for small rooms but that surely loses a bit of meaning in too noisy exteriors. It is important to emphasize that it is tuned by Binatone, audio specialists.

For its part it has AUX connection 3,5 mm (with cable included) that will allow us to add any non-wireless audio source. To charge it we use a microUSB cable (also included in the box) and very little more. For audio reception it has Bluetooth 4.1 and has a micron which will allow us to interact with voice assistants and of course answer phone calls, which by the way, we have done a hands-free test and it defends itself very well. Finally, we have a playback time of up to 4 hours, although via Bluetooth we have managed to get around 3 hours approximately with a single charge, which takes about an hour.

Integration with Alexa midway

It is true that it is sold as a device capable of working with Alexa, and it is true. The first thing we must do is connect it via Bluetooth to our device, for this we simply do the following:

  1. Press Play / Pause button for 5 seconds
  2. Wait for the indicator LED to blink blue and red
  3. Find it on the sending device and pair

Now we will have to download the application Hubble Connect, which will allow us to pair the device and with which we can interact. It will offer us a button to invoke Alexa and Google Assistant, this being the only mechanism, that is: Forget about invoking Alexa through the speaker itself, it is the mobile device that interacts, so it has left us a bittersweet taste, however In our tests we have seen how the Motorola Sonic Boost 210 acts as an intermediary very well. In our case we have only done the tests with Amazon's Alexa.

Editor's opinion

Pros

  • It is compact and very comfortable to transport
  • Delivers crystal clear sound at full power
  • Has integration with Alexa and other virtual assistants
  • It is very well built

Cons

  • Lacks some power to surprise
  • To use Alexa you need to mediate with the smartphone
  • It could give something more at the level of autonomy

We find a small speaker for only 25 euros approximately and that it offers the audio quality that we can expect from something like that, while the tuning is quite good and offers a very clear sound, we see that It lacks some power, but we must never stop taking into account that it practically fits in the palm of the hand. As a portable speaker it is interesting, since it offers direct connection to Google Assistant and Alexa despite costing "so little." It is a recommended product but it may be a bit short if you want to impress, so perhaps I would recommend putting a little more if you are looking for power, always reminding you that this integration with Alexa few wireless speakers offer it, much less for 25 euros.
