NYPD to trade Windows Phone for iPhone

10 Windows Mobile

Microsoft has done everything possible, or so they will think at the company offices, to try to get its Windows mobile platform become an alternative to the two great ones that reign in the market and that at the moment do not leave room for any other: iOS and Android.

In its quest to try to make Windows Phone a popular handset, the Redmond-based company struck a deal with the NYPD to equip all city police with a smartphone managed by Windows Phone. Specifically, the agreement put 36.000 Lumia 830 and Lumia 640 XL terminals in the hands of the police.

Microsoft also developed a specific application so that police officers could access the police database from their smartphone. While it is true that these terminals are more than enough to consult data, make calls and take some other photos, the police technology department has decided to renew all terminals for an iPhone, without specifying the specific model.

The problem that this department has encountered is the announcement made last June by Microsoft announcing that it stopped offering support to these terminals. Security in these terminals is necessary and the New York Police Department cannot play in this regard, putting access to the data it stores at risk.

While it is true that they could have reached an agreement with Microsoft to continue offering support, It seems that not even Microsoft itself had much confidence in this operating system that we could say that it was born dead and Windows 10 Mobile did not contribute to improve the image of the Windows 10 mobile platform.

In addition, Microsoft has never bothered to launch advertising campaigns or reach agreements with the operators to offer their terminals as a perfectly valid alternative to iOS and Android in a market with continuous growth.
