Nintendo Switch Lite: The smallest and cheapest version of the console

Nintendo Switch Lite Colors

After months of rumors about it, the Nintendo Switch Lite finally becomes official. Nintendo presents this new version of its console. We can consider it more like a new version than a new console. We are facing a smaller alternative, with a more accessible price in this case. Although this brings some limitations.

Since in exchange for having a cheaper console, the Nintendo Switch Lite sacrifice the ability to connect to a TV with the dock or the function of separating the Joy-Con as it happens in the normal version. According to the company, this console is presented as an option to play Nintendo Switch titles in portable mode.

In the case of design, we do not find many changesIt's just more compact than the original model. Nintendo knows what has worked well with the original console and now they leave us with a new version designed for a different audience.

Compact design

As its name allows us to guess, the Nintendo Switch Lite is slightly smaller than the original model. It has a size of 91,1 x 208 x 13,9 millimeters and the weight also becomes 275 grams in this case. A little lighter, since the original has a weight of about 300 grams. So it is a minimal difference in this case that we find.

The screen is also smaller in this case. A 5,5 inch size LCD touch panel has been used. There are no changes to the resolution, which remains at 1.280 × 720 pixels from the original. The autonomy is also maintained in the console. According to Nintendo, the six hours of autonomy that we had in the original are maintained. Although we find a performance improvement on the Nintendo Switch Lite of between 20% and 30%, due to the fact that a new chip has been introduced.

Game modes

Nintendo Switch Lite

Game modes are a major change in this new console from the Japanese firm. As we have already mentioned, in this case we find a series of limitations in it, which are what make it cheaper than the original Switch. So it is an aspect that we must take into account in this regard. The options for connecting or disconnecting external accessories are different this time.

  • Not compatible with Nintendo Labo
  • Controls are built into the console and cannot be separated
  • Cannot use desktop mode without external Joy-Con
  • Cannot use TV mode
  • The Nintendo Switch Lite does not have a video output
  • It is not compatible with the base of the original Switch

The game modes are different, although the connectivity remains unchanged in the same. We have WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC connection that we were in the original also present in it. In addition, accessories that have been previously purchased can be used in it. The Joy-Con or others like Switch Pro or Poké Ball Plus.

Nintendo Switch Lite Catalog

One of the big doubts for many users was whether or not the Nintendo Switch Lite would be compatible with games from the original console. Nintendo confirms that it is compatible with all games in the catalog that can be played in handheld mode. Also with those in desktop mode, as long as the user has the Joy-Con that have been purchased separately, since they are external. Although in some games there may be restrictions.

In addition, it has been confirmed that there are absolute backward compatibility between the two consoles, thanks to Nintendo Switch Online. On the other hand, the console is compatible with all the multiplayer games that we find in the original Switch. So in this sense there doesn't seem to be anything to worry about.

The console is released in three colors, which are gray, turquoise, and yellow. We can also buy the console together with a kit with cover and screen protector. At the moment nothing has been mentioned about exclusive accessories, so we do not know if there will be any.

Its sale price is $ 199 in the United States. For now, an official price has not been revealed in Spain for it, although if we consult the price of the Nintendo Switch ($ 299 - 319 euros), it is likely that this new console will be launched in Spain with a price close to 200 euros. But since Nintendo have not given prices for it at the moment.

In addition to the normal version, it is confirmed that there will be two special versions of the Nintendo Switch Lite. These are the two editions Zacian and Zamazenta.
