[Opinion] In this 'next-gen' Naughty Dog is not surprising

It was what everyone expected. We did not know what or how much we were going to see but yes, since Neil Druckman confirmed it the day before, we were clear that Uncharted 4 I was going to make an appearance at the opening gala of the Playstation Experience. This has been the case and, in addition, surprising everyone, there were more than fifteen minutes of pure and simple gameplay, without cheating or cardboard, as the game had never been shown before. And it was something relatively logical due to the uncertainty about a title that could follow the wake of Uncharted 3 or The Last of Us, radically different games.

And it is clear that Uncharted 4 is still Uncharted and that is, perhaps, its main flaw or point for improvement, the extremely excessive continuity that is palpable in a simple 15-minute demo chosen on purpose by Naughty Dog. And maybe It is surprising that the game does not surprise technically, as one might expect a study like N could do by now in the generation. In that aspect it is impeccable, of course, but nothing really surprising is seen except, perhaps, quite "alive" and very attractive vegetation. There are still details of an exquisite care such as that fringe that falls after a stream of water falls on Nathan Drake's head but at no time does it have the feeling of surprise that was had at the time as Uncharted 2 or, recently, The Witcher 3 or, without going any further, The Order 1886.

Before delving I have to say that the feeling after the fifteen minutes of playability shown was that of "I've already been there and I've already done that". Okay, I can understand a certain continuity in a franchise with three main deliveries behind it, but you have to take into account certain relevant points: Uncharted 3 came out in 2011 so when the fourth installment hits the stores, four years will have passed; The title was developed by the studio's "B-team" and it was clear that while Uncharted 2 was a game that revolutionized a genre and set the way forward, the third part not only did not show substantial improvements but also gave several raisins back in script, situations, setting, etc. It is for this and for the success of the excellent The Last of Us that I was not expecting, at all, a more of the same so extremely cheeky.

And it is that finding an environment that seems to mix what was seen in the first Uncharted with the recent Tomb Raider does not seem like a good first step when it comes to surprising and if that is followed by jumping, climbing or combat animations exactly identical to what was seen in the last titles of the franchise, things do not seem to be getting better. The shooting section seems to have been slightly polished, which, yes, I think it still needs a more radical change because in Uncharted 3 it left a lot to be desired. Good news is that additions in the form of stealth and hook when moving through the jungle which, without being anything revolutionary at all, add certain layers of depth to a game whose mechanics boiled down to climbing and gunfights.

To begin with, I think that double standard that exude certain opinions that elevate what has been seen in Uncharted 4 as the "authentic next-gen" or "the next GOTY without discussion" while the new installments of Assassin's Creed or Far Cry are fervently criticized, without going any further. It is clear that being a continuist in a higher level franchise will mean that we are facing another level game but, precisely because Naughty Dog is behind and precisely because it comes from the worst installment of the franchise (that the director and the main responsible parties are no longer in Naughty Dog after having started this fourth installment themselves, I think it is a sign), with three years and a generational leap in between, it is totally understandable to demand much more in the face of such a measured evolution in the playable.

There is still a year left and the room for improvement in technical matters is great. But beyond generated hairs in engine, in game o CGI and other bullshit, what I expected from Naughty Dog was a cool experience within a familiar structure. That they came to show that this next-gen who is having such a hard time getting started, had more to offer than the same Ps3 and 360 experiences with a layer of makeup. It will be a good game, I don't think there is any doubt about that, but from this franchise and this study it was logical to expect much more and not that supine passivity when introducing significant news. We will have to keep waiting for surprises.

Look…. you are a hater, you don't like video games. I don't know what you're doing here, you're pedantic and boring.

      Hello,

I have been writing about videogames for five years and it is something that I am passionate about. That is why I expect the best possible from each of them and more when the responsible study is one of the most reputable in the industry. And, of course, I argue and exemplify every point of my opinion, which is obviously totally personal and subjective. Don't you like it or don't you agree? Perfect. But entering disqualifications I think is a bit absurd and, above all, not appropriate.

      A greeting.

My comment has been the response to a series of publications that leave much to be desired.
I usually read this blog because it seems to me that it is a good portal, updated, nurtured and full of news and analyzes that are of considerable interest. What I want to make clear with this is that your publications lower the level a lot and leave me with a bad taste in my mouth that is gradually taking away my interest in the blog.
The reasons? Coarse and confusing analyzes, totally remote in many cases from reality and that I believe only confuse the consumer. Not a good point of reference for future video game buyers.
The opinions that you sometimes give about video games are nothing more than such banal and superfluous subjectivities that they invite the reader to hit the close box.
I could go on with countless examples like that, but I'd like to highlight one that I find striking.
As a writer, you need to pay a little attention to the writing. I work with elementary school children who write me much more coherently than what I am used to reading in your publications.

Commenting on this publication has simply been an outburst because it was the straw that broke the camel's back. After seeing in recent days a cascade of publications made and that in each one of them I was upset, I jumped in and launched myself to put my opinion, to encourage you to reflect and, if possible, encourage you to recap and You think about how to improve the quality of your publications so as not to reduce the quality of the portal.

PS: I don't want to be pedantic, but when you post for the public, you have to be prepared for the public's responses (be it criticism or praise)

        Regards

          Hello,

          Your comment is appreciated.

It is true, of course, that I have not published any analysis as such for many months and I do not know which one you mean in that regard. Regarding other pieces of opinion that you criticize, such as this one, I would like to know the specific details that you find objectionable and "low level" in terms of grammar or spelling.

Regarding the quality of the text itself, that comes to everyone's taste but if one thing is clear to me is that their coherence is not comparable or much less inferior to the texts of a primary school child.

So, I would like you to exemplify your criticisms and not remain empty. What do you find objectionable in this text? It strikes me that the first criticism was that I am a hater and I don't like video games and then the sensible and reasoned criticism was about the quality of my texts. Is it the form or the substance that can be criticized?

          Thank you for your message.

      Hello,

I repeat the same as the partner above. If you don't agree with the opinion piece, perfect, we can't all think in the same way or have the same tastes.

But if your contribution, instead of arguing why you do not agree or why, from your point of view, my perception is wrong, it consists of disqualifying and disrespecting, the messages do not contribute absolutely anything and are only one waste of time on your part.

If you want to debate, from respect.

      A greeting.

Hello, I agree with Javier Monfort, I am a super fan of the uncharted trilogy, I was super excited to see the gameplay since the beginning of this year so that they show me more, of the same, the change is not seen as from uncharted 1 to 2, It is the fault of these guys who made the last of us, these guys don't understand that uncharted is a different game than the last of us, thanks to these guys the heart of uncharted Amy had to give up naughty dog, followed by the director of uncharted, I just hope they do not ruin this saga, which is one of my favorites, I will continue to wait for new gameplays, that show me the true potential of uncharted, the true naughty dog that I admire so much and that since play 1 with crash bandicoot I do not disappoint ... greetings!
