ROG Strix Scar 17, a very premium gaming laptop [Analysis]

Asus recently introduced a new range of laptops ROG (Republic of Gamers) to captivate the most demanding audience. Far from the offers with adjusted prices, on this occasion ROG has sought to meet the demands of the most exquisite with a device that both for performance and price is not available to everyone.

Design and contents of the box

This Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is quite a "mazacote", we are faced with a huge product, as soon as we take it out of the box we realize it. The packaging is quite curious, when we open it, we are directly shown the laptop that has dimensions of 39,97 x 29,34 x 2,79 cm for a total weight of 2,9 Kg, that is said soon. But all this without counting the external power supply, which is also around a kilogram and is quite considerable.

  • Size: 39,97 x 29,34 x 2,79 cm
  • Weight: 2,9 Kg

However, the device is made primarily of aluminum and has the traditional ROG design. We have a trackpad that is not particularly large, but has two physical buttons at the bottom. On the right side we also have a numeric keyboard, something that is appreciated if we also use it to work, which never hurts. On the other hand, the LEDs have an important role around the entire device and in the logo on the back. An aggressive but very heavy design, somewhere you had to put so much cutting edge hardware.

Technical characteristics

Now we go to the purely technical. We start with the possibility of choosing between a 7th generation Intel Core iXNUMX or its older brother the Intel Core i9. For their part, both versions have 32GB of DDR4 RAM up to 3200MHz divided in two 16GB modules, We will not lack any RAM, that is clear.

Regarding the battery we find 66Wh in total and a rather traditional and bulky network adapter. It is loaded from the rear as it has been the case in ROG designs. Regarding storage we have two SSDs of 500 GB each with technology NVMe, but we have a third port in case we want to increase the memory even more, we can include up to 3 SSD type M2 disks.

We now turn to "what's important", the graphics card. We mount an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super, so we go directly to the top of the gamer laptops with the best hardware on the market. Special mention to the curious key that we can customize with functions, assignment of LEDs and even unlocking the system.

Concevity and customization

As for connectivity, practically everything is left for the back, there we will find three ports USB-A 3.2, a 3,5 mm Jack, RJ45 port to connect a LAN cable, an HDMI 2.0 to get good quality and let's not forget, a USB-C port compatible with DisplayPort that will allow us to get image and sound through it. Of course there is plenty in the section on physical connectivity and I have not been able to make a complaint in this regard. For me it is still important that HDMI is present in a laptop, as it is far from being an obsolete format.

For its part, at the wireless level we have Bluetooth 5.1 and most importantly, a WiFi 6 network card which has given us excellent results both at the download level and at the signal range level. A graphics card that certainly lives up to what you would expect in a product with these characteristics. The result has been excellent as you can see in the video where it reaches speeds of 500 MB download.

Screen and multimedia section

The other aspect where this stands out the most ROG Strix Scar 17 is the screen, we have a panel that occupies 82% of the total with a highly worked anti-reflection coating. The brightness and color setting is more than correct in its standard format, and we can customize it with ROG's Aura tools. For its part we have resolution Full HD (1920 x 1080) and most importantly, a refresh rate of 300 Hz with a response time of 3ms. The result is simply spectacular.

For your part in sound two 4,2 watt speakers left With an intelligent amplifier, the result is enhanced bass, quality sound and I have not found distortions at high volumes, yes, I have to say that the final power is not particularly noteworthy.

This Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 offers cooling through liquid metals and a set of fans that do not reach 50 dB that dissipate the heat generated by the equipment. The autonomy is in the background, just over three hours demanding video games, we are going to use it mainly plugged in.

Editor's opinion

We have put the ROG Strix Scar 17 to the test with Cities Skylines, CoD Modern Warfare or Dirt 2.0 and we have not found anything that resists it. It is clear that they are not particularly demanding video games, but the hardware of this device does not invite us to want to challenge it, because we are going to hit the wall again and again.

We have a pretty heavy device, yes, but it is clearly focused on offering a little more freedom to the most demanding gamers. It clearly ranks above Asus ROG's Strix X range and for the price that makes us wonder. However, the capabilities of its hardware would make it a fairly versatile device if we had the option of using it as a workstation. You can buy it from € 2.300 on Amazon (LINK) or on your own webpage
