Rugged SSD (500 GB) an ultra-rugged portable hard drive [Review]

Accessories are an important part of our day-to-day life, and it is that contrary to what happened in the past, our devices usually require a good number of peripherals to be able to accompany us in normal work. A very common need is that of portable mass storage, hard drives that go from one place to another with the data you need to work, and that is precisely the need that LaCie wants to cover.

This time we are going to try the new LaCie Rugged SSD 500 GB, a product that is designed to withstand and safeguard our data during work days abroad. Seagate with its LaCie division knows that it must meet these needs of video recording and editing professionals, and this Rugged SSD is a product designed by and for them.

Design and construction materials

We go first with the size, and that is that we have an ultra-resistant hard disk that measures 17 x 64,9 x 97,9 millimeters for a total weight of 100 grams, that is to say, quite compact. It is completely covered in rubber and has a single USB-C port on the back that is fully waterproof. In the package we will include a USB-C 3.1 Cable and a USB-C to USB-A Cable for quick connection as well as a one-month trial for Adobe Creative Cloud. This is the content, a fairly modern packaging and designed to get rid of it quickly (fully recyclable).

Thus, we are faced with a product that has resistance to water and falls (about 3 meters depending on the box), and it is the sensation that it gives us considering its rubbery touch. It's a rather garish orange color, so it doesn't seem easy to lose it in a harsh environment (nor is it the prettiest thing in the world to use indoors).

We can immerse it in water up to one meter for about thirty minutes, Although the guarantee will not be responsible (it indicates it on the box) if we have problems with water. In terms of falls, it resists approximately 2000 kilograms of pressure. In short, IP67 certification

Technical characteristics

We have a 500 GB SSD in the NVMe category benchmark unit, the most common on the market and promising up to 1000 MB / s of transfer, although these are speeds that we have only reached in terms of reading. For its part, the brand promises us up to 950 MB / s of transferring and editing 4K RAW video directly through the product. In our tests through Thunderbolt 2 we have achieved good speeds and a fairly light performance, but not the 1000 MB / s that the brand promises, something obvious considering that we have done it through a USB-A port.

It has the Integrated drivers that will allow us to use it with both Windows and macOS without any problem (we have not been able to certify the operation in Linux) as well as the technology of Seagate Secure data self-encryption, interesting and obvious considering that we are actually dealing with a Seagate subdivision. For its part, we also have a guarantee to rescue data lost due to device failure of up to five years.

The product is designed by Neil Poulton and is intended for those who have to shoot and edit video in adverse circumstances. The design is definitely quite capable of withstanding.

User experience

In our tests this SSD has shown itself quite fast. For its part, it is worth mentioning that its extremely compact and light design helps to carry it in any pocket of the backpack, it feels like a minimally invasive device in terms of our load, and that is greatly appreciated. In fact it weighs less than most external batteries of a similar size. It offers almost exactly what it promises, but we must bear in mind that they are especially expensive products, especially if we take into account the storage capacities. The 1TB model can be found on Amazon from approximately 220 euros, you can buy it at THIS LINK.
