Smartmi Air Purifier, a very competent purifier with H13 filters

Air purification has become a modern concern but no less important, right here we have analyzed numerous purifiers that help us to keep our home as pure as possible and free of allergens, something to be appreciated in these times. A Xiaomi sub-brand that has been with us for a long time could not be missing in our analysis catalog.

We analyze the new Smartmi Air Purifier, an air purifier complete in design and functionality with H13 filters that promise great performance. We are going to take a look at this product that is intermediate in price in terms of the range of these types of devices to see if it is really worth it or not.

Design and materials: Light but remarkable renovation

As you well know, the previous Smartmi product of this size and range was totally square, with rounded corners, yes, but far from the design offered by this Smartmi Air Purifier. However, the traditional color palette is maintained, for example. Despite all this, the matt white plastic is kept as the main construction element, accompanied by a completely cylindrical design that makes it appear more compact and, above all, better worked in all aspects.

It inevitably reminds us of the i3000, a Philips purifier that is practically identical, both by design and by the fact that the LED panel is located in the upper area and is the one that allows us to fully adjust the parameters of the air purifier. Handbook. Comparisons are hateful, yes, but when we analyze products of a specific range we have no choice but to also mention those with which they are most related. In general terms, like all the products of this Xiaomi sub-brand, we are faced with a well-finished device that is pleasant to the eye and to the touch.

Technical characteristics

This Smartmi Air Purifier has as it could not be otherwise with WiFi connectivity and this allows us to control the purifier through the Xiaomi Mi Home application available for iOS and Android, As well as synchronizing it with the main virtual assistants, we are obviously talking about Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, not so with Siri or those derived from Apple HomeKit, although other Xiaomi products do have that integration. In addition to this and the manual control itself, we have an «AUTO» mode that performs an intelligent optimization of the purification speed according to the different sensors that are arranged on the back of the Smartmi Air Purifier, the mode that I mainly recommend .

We have several levels of ventilation, being that the low noise mode offers around 19 dB, enough to hear the fan but not to cause a nuisance during the day. For the night we have the «night mode» which greatly limits this speed and improves rest.

In the same way, to interact with the device we can take advantage of or its touch screen, or a gestural system through proximity sensors that will allow us to carry out the main adjustments without having to touch the touch panel in the upper area. Our interaction with the gesture system has not been very good, I would say that I prefer the adjustment by application or directly by touching the screen.

Purification capacity

Here the Smartmi Air Purifier does the rest. To begin with, we have a HEPA H13 filter that is capable of absorbing bad odors, smoke, TVOC particles (typical of cleaning products) and of course pollen. In the panel we will be able to find information about both the PM2.5 that we have in the air and the TVOC status indicator, in addition to another indicator of the operating mode, temperature and of course the humidity index that is in the location of the air purifier.

In these terms and taking advantage of its "intelligent" double sensor, we find that using about twelve air purifications per hour, this device is theoretically capable of cleaning around 15 square meters in five minutes, so this one in particular would be recommended for double rooms or small living rooms, in no case for larger complete rooms or corridors. However, its high-efficiency activated carbon filter uses three mechanisms:

  • Primary filter for dust, hair and large particles
  • True HEPA an H13 filter that filters 99,97% of the particles eliminating even bacteria and germs
  • Activated charcoal to absorb formaldehyde, smoke and bad odors along with VOCs.

In efficiency we would speak of 400 m3 per hour for pollen and the same for CADR particles, while we have an extended filter paper surface of 20.000 cm3. In this way, it would filter 99,97% of the particles smaller than 0,3 nanometers, as well as the rest of the elements that we have talked about previously.

Despite the official status of the product, I have not been able to find the filter separately, whose durability is also not specified and that will be managed by the Mi Home application or by the screen's own warning device, a shame. I imagine that more distributors of the filters will arrive, at the moment I can not specify nor the price nor the point of sale where you can buy them, from my point of view something decisive when carrying out the purchase of a product of these characteristics, no matter how long the filter has a high durability.

Editor's opinion

We are facing a purifier that technically and on paper offers very good characteristics, better if possible than its rivals at the same price and even significantly superior. We have for 259 euros a very complete purifier that has all the characteristics that one would expect from such a product. Unfortunately I cannot let go of the negative point that I cannot find spare parts availability at points of sale such as PC Components or Amazon, which are a reference in Spain, beyond the fact that they may be available on sites like AliExpress.
