Ultimate Ears BOOM 3, the all-terrain speaker and all quality

We have already had the pleasure of analyzing the occasional product from Ultimate Ears, a Logitech subdivision responsible for high-quality wireless audio. An example is the Wonderboom range, the smallest of a set of ultra-rugged speakers we had in this analysis.

This time we have the oldest of the brothers, the Ultimate Ears BOOM 3 in our hands to see what the latest version of one of their flagships has to offer us. Stay with us and discover the Ultimate Ears BOOM 3, an ultra-resistant speaker that floats and offers a truly powerful sound, Is it really worth it?

As always we will analyze each of the details of the device so that you can weigh your purchaseIn such a speaker we have to focus on the construction, connectivity, compatibility and of course the quality of its sound. It is clear that this is not just any speaker, and anyone who has tried the Ultimate Ears BOOM range knows it well, so stay with us and discover if it is really worth paying the 118,15 euros that it costs in this Amazon link. Without further ado, let's go there with an in-depth analysis.

Stronger, bigger, but much prettier

The previous model was extremely resistant, large and powerful, however, for many of us it was difficult to match the design of it in all kinds of situations, it was a shame that it broke the aesthetics of a room just because of its large rubber coverings despite of the fabulous sound that it presented and the extensive autonomy it has. Nevertheless, Ultimate Ears has decided to do something halfway between resistance and designThis time, betting on the same materials, but marrying them in such a way that betting on simplicity they provide the same result without attracting so much attention. You can buy this edition in six colors: Blue, black, purple, red, pink and dark green.

  • Size: 73mm diameter x 184mm height
  • Weight: 608 grams
  • Resistance: IP67 submersible for 30 minutes
  • Two-color iridescent fabric
  • Fleet in water

We have a nylon coating all over the device, while on the front the speaker presides over its two characteristic (and giant) volume buttons. In the back we have the mythical nylon loop that serves to hang and transport it, as well as in the lower part the waterproof cover that hides the little one microUSB charging port (first slap on the wrist for not betting on USB-C). At the top we have three buttons: On off; Magic Button and Bluetooth pairing, the firm has always bet on the simplicity of its buttons and has done it again. Of course it is not a small device, but it falls within the logic, what is perhaps more surprising is its weight, more than half a kilogram for a device that has 360º audio with high power. It should be noted that in the package we find both the instructions and a charging cable, but not the power supply.

Hardware and connectivity features

The connectivity is unique, we do not have any type of AUX input since it can compromise the integrity of the device, but to be honest ... what would it have really cost to include it? Be that as it may we only have Bluetooth 4.2 as the only system to send you sound. We have the official application that will allow us to pair up to eight devices through it, forming an improvised multiroom system that will create a network of up to 45 meters in range, we have tested the quality with other devices of the brand and it works in a totally simple way, without presenting problems in the audio or in the connectivity, a couple of friends and a collection of the BOOM range can throw a good party that ends up annoying the neighbors, so you have to hold back a bit. Refering to autonomy we will have up to 15 hours at medium volumes, of which we have been able to reach up to 12 hours at higher volumes With a single charge, yes, a full charge will take us almost two hours.

We have a maximum sound level of 90 dBA in a frequency range of 90 Hz - 20 kHz thanks to its two 5-centimeter translators and its 5 x 10-centimeter passive radiators to accentuate the bass, but these are all numbers… right? The BOOM 3 sounds strong, in fact we could say that it actually sounds very strong, more than enough to occupy an entire room or an office. In addition, we have been testing through different qualities of Spotify and other providers and the reality is that the BOOM 3 it has not had performance problems or sound distortion at high volume. The basses are extremely good and this Ultimate Ears performs spectacularly both in commercial music and when we switch to a bit of Rock & Roll or flamenco, I can't hide that this brand offers from my humble point of view the best rugged wireless speakers From the market. We must never forget that BOOM 3 has 360º sound, which guarantees that it will sound just as strong and just as good wherever we put it.

The Magic Button and the charging station

We start with the main accessory, we remember that this time Ultimate Ears has provided its device with a kind of "connector" on the back that will allow us to acquire a charging base, this is really ideal for what we said before, to be able to use The BOOM 3 also in a closed environment such as the office and simply take it from its charging base and enjoy it outdoors, this is really fantastic. This white charger is called power up and we simply have to place the device on top, without being wireless charging, it will keep it securely attached avoiding slipping and will always keep it ready to run. We can use the speaker while it is on the base, but you may not like the price so much, around 41 euros purchased from their website.

The Magic Button is a way that Logitech intends for us to interact with our music, allows you to control Apple Music and Deezer Premium through their own application and choose which are the custom tracks or complete lists that we control through this button. Despite being somewhat innovative on the part of the firm, honestly the complexity of use and having to use the Ultimate Ears application has chosen to continue playing music in a more traditional way and managing the content from the mobile phone.

Editor's opinion

Worst

Cons

  • The high price of the charging base
  • Does not include charger
  • Use microUSB cable

As always, we start with what we liked the least. In the first place I have to go back to pulling the ears of a firm for continuing to use the microUSBYes, I know that it is the most standardized and what we all have out there, but if we do not take the definitive step to USB-C we will delay it unnecessarily. Nor has it finished convincing me that an accessory as decisive as the Power UP station which can give the BOOM 3 a second utility cost almost half that of the device, in fact I think they should include it with the device.

Best

Pros

  • Materials, design and resistance of the same
  • The power and quality of its 360º sound
  • Connectivity and ease of use

Once again with Ultimate Ears I have to say that what I liked the most was precisely the immense quality of sound it offers, powerful and clear. For its part, the speaker is also ultra-resistant and that is appreciated outdoors, where it will perform with extreme ease. The design has been renewed and for the better, from my point of view a total success and boom now does not out of tune in almost any situation.

Definitely the BOOM 3 is one of the best alternatives that we can acquire within its category, not to say the best. We have 360º sound with incredible power for its size, a resistance that will make us believe that breaking it is simply impossible and a design that gives good faith of its quality. The materials do not clash and so with practically everything. The BOOM 3 has become a round purchase for those who are clear about what they want and what they are looking for, yes, you will have to go through the checkout to get a product of this quality, and that is In Amazon you can get it from 118,15 euros. It is a high price, we already know that, especially when in the absence of offers it is launched almost up to 150 euros, but the reality is that if you are looking for a speaker with these characteristics this is the reference and we could say that all the others are mere substitutes It is not difficult for me at all to recognize that the BOOM 3 may be precisely the best device in its category, and of course, these types of products have a price. It is because of that I have no choice but to recommend the BOOM 3 if what you are looking for is a resistant speaker, with a great autonomy and without a doubt with an immense sound quality that others are hardly going to offer you.
