We reviewed the 3rd generation Echo Dot with built-in clock

Amazon has updated many of the products in its Echo range, including the Amazon Echo that is now the third generation, We recommend that you go through our in-depth analysis. But now we are here to talk about another of the products in the catalog, more specifically the Amazon Echo Dot, the small speaker with Alexa has received some new features, such as a clock and a very slight redesign. Stay with us and discover this new 3rd generation Amazon Echo Dot with built-in clock, a small speaker with Alexa that wants to sneak into your bedside tableLet's see what you have to tell us.

Design and materials

This 3rd generation Amazon Echo Dot with built-in clock will inevitably remind you of its previous version, since it is practically identical, in fact it retains both its dimensions and its weight completely, we have 143 x 99 x 99 millimeters for a total weight of 300 grams, quite a bit to be honest. You will not be able to differentiate it from the previous model, although in this case the edition we tested is the version with a clock, it has a series of LEDs that will give us the time, which is coincidentally the question that was most asked to this small smart speaker .

We have nylon to cover the device, a silicone base on the bottom to prevent it from moving, on the back the power input port and the 3,5mm Jack output port in case we want to make any other speaker smart. At the top the same controls as always: Summon Alexa; Turn up the volume; Lower volume and mute the microphones. We have no more news, in fact the LED ring that shows us the status of the speaker is still exactly the same as before, nor is it new. The truth is that Amazon has risked quite little.

Technical characteristics

As for the sound we have exactly the same as before, that is, Amazon has not innovated at all inside this 3rd generation Amazon Echo Dot. We have four microphones that are what will help us to talk to Alexa (and that are insufficient if we are playing music at maximum volume on the speaker). On the other hand we have a 40mm mono speaker to play music, no support at the bass level or subwoofers. For the rest it is worth mentioning that we do not have compatibility with Dolby Audio, definitely at the performance level it is to get us out of the way.

Notably Its LED lighting will indicate both the temperature and the volume of the device if we are interacting with this data, as well as the exact time. On the other hand, the back has a 3,5mm Jack audio output that will allow us to "make intelligent" any other speaker that we want to add. We have Bluetooth with A2DP and AVRCP protocol, as well as Dual band WiFi, both 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz depending on our needs, I always recommend using the 2,4 GHz band to gain compatibility and signal stability.

Amazon Echo Dot Features

Beyond the fact that it is a good performance speaker, we now have an LED display that will show us the time. This was one of the details most demanded by users and that you can transport it directly to your nightstand. This LED screen is dimmed when we indicate it or when we turn off the lights through Alexa, but as we have said, it also shows temperature and volume information if we request it. For the rest, Spotify Connect and compatibility with the classic Skills of the Amazon store.

Now that we have a watch, We can also set alarms for you directly, both to delay them and tell you to play certain music. We simply have to ask Alexa and the system will determine that we are facing an alarm clock. This is undoubtedly the most interesting feature of this device, which transports it directly to your bedside table, and that is that youOnce the brightness of the LED display is dimmed, we don't have too much trouble, it's not unpleasant and fully integrates into any room décor, it is certainly the ideal Echo for a bedroom.

User Experience

My experience with this Amazon Echo Dot 3rd Generation it has been relatively bearable considering what the main function is. It is a good companion for the bedside table and can replace our usual alarm clock, this assuming that you are not one of those who uses the mobile device as an alarm clock, which is normal today. At least you can see in an instant what the time is without having to ask it and it will show something more interesting information such as the temperature and even the exact volume at which something is being played.

This speaker, however, serves little more than to perform functions with Alexa such as managing our home automation devices or listening to the radio and even a podcast. The music is reproduced with non-existent bass and insufficient volume, of course it is an ideal accompaniment device but not a sufficient music player, We have many factors against it and that is that the speaker is not enough to be pleasant, although it seems ideally adjusted to offer a clear voice, in fact we can even make calls if we wish (we recommend that you watch the video on our YouTube channel ).

Editor's opinion

Definitely the first stumbling block is in the price, its standard price is 69,99 euros, although the version without a clock is still kept for 59,99 euros. We have four colors in the model with clock: Black, light gray, dark gray and pink. I'm missing a blue model, but it's not bad either, to be honest. It is difficult for me to recommend it, however if we take into account the value for money and that we can bet for a little more money for other products in the same range such as the 3rd generation Amazon Echo, which is a high-performance product, this is going to depend on your needs.
