Yealink UVC20, a good companion for teleworking [Review]

Teleworking has arrived and it seems to stay. There are more and more conferences, presentations or meetings that we do telematically through Teams, Skype, Zoom or any alternative available on the market. However, it is in these moments when we have realized that perhaps the webcam and the microphone of your computer were not so good ...

It is necessary to improve the performance of our camera and our microphone if we want to obtain good results, and for this we have intelligent solutions. We take an in-depth look at Yealink's UVC20 webcam, a perfect companion for your Microsoft Teams meetings and much more.

Materials and design

In this case, despite the feeling that the the packaging, the reality is that the product is well achieved. Made of plastic almost entirely, we have a glass / methacrylate coating on the entire front that gives it a pretty premium feel. The sensor in the front part has all the prominence while the microphone hole is located on the right side and on the left the LED indicator of the device status. We continue with at least a totally mechanical lens closure system that will allow us to gain privacy.

  • Measurements: 100mm x 43mm x 41mm

For its part, we have a base with a hinge system that makes this camera an almost universal system and fully available for all monitors and laptops, even if we wish we can take advantage of the universal thread for tripods on the base, or enjoy its system that allows us to leave it directly on the table. There are many alternatives that it offers us, especially if we consider that the camera is capable of rotating on itself both vertically and horizontally. Versatility by flag in this webcam with built-in microphone.

Technical characteristics

We are going to enjoy a webcam with this Yealink UVC20 that offers an autofocus range of between 10 centimeters and 1,5 meters. We have a cable in the back USB 2.0 2,8 meters which will be more than enough for almost all locations. However, it is time to focus on your sensor, we have a model 5 MP CMOS with f / 2.0 aperture which is capable of offering video output at 1080p FHD resolution at 30FPS as the maximum capacity. For efficient results, it has autofocus that works remarkably well and dynamic range to fine-tune contrasts and brightness.

The device will be compatible with Windows and macOS without any problem. For its part, the microphone is omni-directional and will have an SNR of maximum 39 dB. The response frequency, yes, is quite tight between 100 Hz and 12 kHZ, quite conservative results. We have not found any problem in technical capabilities, in fact we would say that we have been surprised by the ability of the Yealink UVC20 to offer good results even with obvious lighting problems in the area of capture.

User experience

The camera has a fully plug-and-play system, This means that we will not have to do any type of configuration prior to its use, the fact that we do not even have downloadable software for this purpose attests to this. Once we connect the Yealink UVC20 camera through the USB port, we find it among the audio and video sources when we make video calls through the various programs for this purpose. In this case we will find both the camera and the microphone of the camera itself separately, allowing us to use our own microphones if we wish.

We have recently used the camera to record the weekly podcast of current iPhone colleagues and you can see it in the embedded video. This is the most appropriate way to see the general performance of the camera, although yes, in this case we have used another audio source. The camera has a fairly fast autofocus, which has surprised me even in poor lighting conditions, and this is one of the most important points to take into account, the fact of having autofocus will allow us to move in front of it without suffering problems in these terms.

Editor's opinion

The camera is not too cheap, and the biggest problem I have encountered is the fact that it is not listed as an available product on Amazon. You can get it on websites like Onedirect at a recommended price of 89,95 euros, Considering that it is a certified product for Microsoft Teams and Zoom, it doesn't seem like much.

The performance is what you would expect from a product with these characteristics, the same happens with the immense versatility of its base and the efficient development of the automatic focus during all video calls, without a doubt, a product that we can recommend if you are looking to improve your presentations.
