1TB Pendrive, what is its price?

1TB Pendrive

I remember years ago, when I bought a specific computer, being told that it would be a good idea to buy an external hard drive to make daily backups of all my files. At that time they told me "buy it 1TB, better than not missing", and I did, I bought a 1TB external hard drive, large, rigid and that I had to connect it to the electrical network. Later, smaller Flash memory disks began to appear that do not require a power outlet and now there are already some other 1TB pendrive available

But are they worth it? Is its price much higher than other pen drives? They're too big? In this post we will try to solve all the doubts you may have about these small memories with large storage capacity. Of course, I advance you that, as usual, the reduced size has a price, one that is not exactly affordable, unless you want to play a Russian roulette buying little famous brands.

How much real capacity does a 1TB pendrive have?

real storage of a pendrive

This is something that I do not quite understand or, rather, I do not want to understand. Every album has a capacity that capacity is not what it says on the label, that is, how they sell it to us. But the reality is very different and in the following list you have several examples:

Disc size according to manufacturer Actual disk size in Gigabytes
160 GB 149 GB
250 GB 232 GB
320 GB 298 GB
500 GB 465 GB
1000GB (1TB) 931 GB
2000GB (2TB) 1862 GB
3000GB (3TB) 2793 GB

And the capacity that I lack in the 1TB pendrive and the rest of the memories? To put it quickly and badly, but to be understood, it is as if a memory had its own operating system to function. Actually, this "operating system" is what is known as RAID (Wikipedia) Y NAS (Wikipedia). The first one will help us to recover the data in the event that the disk breaks. The second is where it stores the IP of the computers, users, groups, etc. So, subtracting the space that the RAID and the NAS need, from the 1.000GB that the manufacturer offers, although in reality it should be 1.024GB, we would have 931GB left so we can store and manage our files.

Is a 1TB pendrive too big?

This will depend on what we compare them with. If we compare them with SanDisk USB Flash Drive ...Ultra Fit »/] from SanDisk, yes, they are huge. The Ultra Fit are pen drives that are practically all USB connectors and hardly protrude from the computer. But if we compare the existing 1TB pendrives with the first pen drives that existed, they would be more or less the same size. Some have dimensions of little more than 7cm, which is nothing if we need to carry a lot of information always with us.

Is a 1TB pendrive very expensive?

Pendrives price

The answer is simple: Yes. This is something of the most logical: the greater the capacity offered by a pendrive, the higher its price. In addition, at the moment there are not many models to choose from, so when buying a 1TB pendrive we will also be paying the price that the little existing offer carries. We can also say that the pendrives of this capacity are something relatively new and whenever we want to buy something that has not been around for long, we will have to pay a little more. If we look back, we will remember that before it was easy to pay a price of 1GB = € 1 and now we can find memories at a price of 1GB = € 0.25 or less. By this I mean that 1TB pen drives are now very expensive, but they will decrease in price over time.

I have come to read on the internet that the only one that creates "real" 1TB pendrives is Kingston, precisely the first model that I will talk about next. Through online stores, even in the most reputable ones like Amazon, we can find some that promise 1TB, but when we get home we have bought a pendrive of only 16-32GB. Like everything in life, if we want to play it safe, it is best to buy the one from Kingston, but its price is very high. The other pendrives can have a price of less than € 100 and there we already have to decide whether to bet and buy it or let it pass. Many times cheap is expensive And I have seen videos of people buying an iPad taking advantage of "an offer" and, when opening the box, what they had bought was a wooden board. I will now tell you about some 1TB pendrives.

HyperX Predator DTHXP 30

HyperX Predator DTHXP 30 1TB

Perhaps the best known is the HyperX Predator DTHXP30 -...Kingstone DataTraveler HyperX Predator DTHXP30 ″ /]. It has dimensions of 7,2 x 2,7 x 2,1 cm and a weight of 45gr. It has been available for about 3 years, so its price has already dropped somewhat, at least on Amazon. Still, we are talking about a USB 3.0 pendrive that is priced at more than 800 €, so it is not recommended if what we want is to take with us two films and four photos 😉 Logically, an outlay like this is only profitable if we are going to amortize it, for example with our work.

1TB USB OTG Micro USB

1TB USB-OTG

If we want a much cheaper one, one option is the No products found.1TB USB OTG Micro USB Flash Drive »/]. The price has nothing to do with the previous one from Kingstone, but we are talking about a USB 2.0 from a brand little or nothing known, yes, also with microUSB. Keep in mind that the memories have a life time and it can happen that, with little use, a pendrive stops working (let them tell my Verbatim 32GB USB ...). If you want to bet on this model, you will only have to pay a little more than € 25, but remember what I said before.

U Disk USB 2.0 1TB

U Disk USB 2.0 1TB Flash Drive

Another option from a little known brand, USB 2.0 and much cheaper than the Kingston is the No products found.U Disk USB 2.0 1TB Flash Drive »/]. This is not available on Amazon Spain, but if it is worth it you can buy it in the US store. Of this I say the same as the previous one, that you have to be careful because it may not last long. The only thing is that your price of $ 44 It invites us to bet on it, and more so if what we are looking for is a small and large capacity USB stick.

For my part, to tell you that I bought the kingston HyperX Savage 256GB pendrive at a good price for 100 euros and it is a pass in the data transfer values, it is very very fast and for that price it is not bad 😉

Hello Pedro. Good price, right? About € 0.39 per Giga with that storage is fine. Nowadays, if you don't pay attention, you can buy more expensive with much less storage. Good buy 😉

      A greeting.
