Assassin's Creed Unity review

Assassin's Creed Unity

A delivery per year, the saga Assassin's Creed It has been wearing out in a very marked way, with two previous episodes that were a clear example of the immobility and lack of innovation in the franchise. On this occasion, the chosen scene is a convulsed Paris in one of the most famous revolts in the history of mankind: the French Revolution.

To the cry of freedom, equality and fraternity, we will make our way through the Parisian streets breathing the revolution and investigating the most extensive stage of the saga, thanks to the power of the new generation consoles for which it has been developed Assassin's Creed Unity. Without a doubt, it was a golden occasion to bet on the renewal of the series, but we fear that the work of Ubisoft It has not lived up to expectations.

The historical context of the French Revolution has been insistently claimed by fans of the saga, who can now play the particular vision of this episode from the prism of the fight between assassins and Templars. We have a city of generous proportions to investigate -especially in its verticality, although beyond climbing to the highest point of the construction in turn, there is nothing else-, more elements have been introduced on screen -with a very sharp popping-, a new lighting system, easier-to-run combat and parkour - powered by an embarrassing drop in image rates - online co-op, and increased customization. It may seem that we can find as much lime as we can find sand, but the shortcomings of the game and its lack of innovation ruin the entire program.

Despite the historical period in which the game takes place, the plot of Assassin's Creed Unity it's pretty laughable. We have the protagonist of the game, Arno dorian, a murderer who, like the entire creed, lives for and to destroy his eternal enemies, the Templars; a girl who will conquer the heart of Arno; a ridiculous villain; a Napoleon anecdotal presence -and with a terrible dubbing by Christian Gálvez-; a poor narrative and a somewhat loose interpretation of the French Revolution. Sincerely, Unity it is quite disappointing in this regard.

The game's setting makes use of the usual patches of the saga: employing period architecture and filling the streets of clone NPCs with the outfit that fits the corresponding historical context. Now there are more random events, such as priests being beaten through the streets, burning of books or executions at the dreaded guillotine. Never before have we seen so many characters on screen in a game of Assassin's Creed, all thanks to the improved hardware of the new generation consoles, but boy, the popping is very striking and trees, structures and even characters appear and disappear easily, even at medium distances.

Parkour in Assassin's creed iv suffered from automation and simplification that in Unity it goes further: we have a lot more grip points, an option to climb diagonally and some more dynamic descents and not as tedious as before. Of course, watchtowers still exist everywhere throughout Paris. Moving through the streets can also be done with more agility, since we can slide under objects or go through windows, while for long distances we have the resource of fast travel - no transport that makes us waste more time than necessary. The combat follows the usual pattern, where the counterattack has a fundamental role to emerge gracefully from the confrontations against the enemies, who once again repeat their typology and weapons - the most common ones equipped with swords, slow with axes and riflemen. The handling continues with the usual inaccuracies, which can cause accidental falls, an awkward moment in the middle of a brawl or ruin a stealth mission.

The duration of the campaign Assassin's Creed Unity It is in the average of the rest of the episodes of the saga, with about 15 hours that can be extended at the cost of collecting collectibles that we must find while exploring Paris, as well as another series of missions and challenges, such as the Helix distortion, murders unsolved or the enigmas of Nostradamus. Of course, there is the novel cooperative that allows two to four people to play in the same game -although we can also play alone if we wish-. This mode consists of 20 missions ranging from assassinations to robberies, through levels of escort. The truth is that this mode stays at half throttle, since as we see it is not very striking, and for those who are wondering, no, it is not possible to play the campaign together with a friend.

At a technical level, we already mentioned that this Assassin's Creed It can boast of having the largest and most crowded city in the entire franchise, but the stability of the frame rate is terrible, since the 30 fps is never kept constant and there will be occasions with very sharp drops. We also have popping problems, even at medium distances, as many clipping problems, frequent loading areas, bugs ... And they are not specific problems, as they affect the fluidity of the game in a very negative way. If we go into qualifying the animations of the non-playable characters, we have unnatural movements and an even lousy recreation of the hair for all the models in the show. Regarding the soundtrack, it provides the appropriate bars for the revolution, although there are no pieces that you will remember; the dubbing is of the usual quality, but the treatment given to Napoleon Bonaparte, not only as a character -with a negligible role-, but also the dubbing made by the television presenter Christian Gálvez, which is the worst of all the voices that we can hear in Unity: Who would come up with the heinous idea of dubbing one of the most iconic figures in the history of mankind with such a tone of voice?

Assassin's Creed Unity It is the reflection of an exhausted saga that calls out for an air of renewal. Many will agree with me that Revelations It was the high point of the franchise, and that since that delivery, the IP has been losing steam, relapsing into the same playable mechanic only made up with the historical mask of the moment. In the technical section, Unity It seems like a game that still needed more months of development, and whose deficiencies directly affect the gameplay, something unforgivable. To this must be added the immobility of the core of the program, with a very exhausted mechanics, an insignificant script and an off-beat protagonism. It is clear that Ubisoft he must give the Brotherhood some truce and better prepare for his next battle.
