Australia to start using fingerprint, iris and facial recognition at its airports

Little by little, new technologies are making their way into all services and Australia is working on it right now, with a project called Seamless Traveler, with which they intend to streamline identification processes at their airports. In this case we are at the beginning of the use of facial, iris and fingerprint recognition to pass security controls without the need to show documents such as passport or identity documents avoiding long lines in this processHowever, these automated control methods today have some technical difficulties that they will have to solve before. In any case, the first steps are already being carried out and they could start operating at Canberra airport this July.

When we say that they will have some technical difficulties, we are not referring to the machines or sensors in charge of collecting this facial, iris or finger recognition data, this works well today, the problem is that before starting to use them it is required to all this data previously collected and here enter the debate on issues related to people's privacy, since all of them have to be previously in a database so that when you use it at the airport it recognizes you. Although it should be noted that in Australia they already have an approved law that allows them to collect this information from their citizens and foreign users who visit the country so we will see how this ends and if it is carried out.

In any case, and leaving aside this "problem" of privacy for users, it is expected that by 2019 all this will already be resolved and underway at this airport. In principle and for a correct use of all these sensors, users will go through the different lanes enabled and will be subjected to cameras and different sensors that will read the data to verify their identity. This is undoubtedly an important step especially for those who travel a lot since they would avoid long lines at the various security checkpoints, but it has some loose fringes that will need to be fixed before implanting it permanently.
