Cannes Film Festival vetoes participation of films from streaming services

Last year, some films produced for the main streaming video services, they managed to win important prizes in some festivals, even creating special categories for content created exclusively for this type of platform, and hinting that this type of film could have a promising future in the industry.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Last year, Netflix competed in Cannes with the films Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories, with which it uncovered Pandora's box among the most purists of cinema, especially among the French media, since those films had not been released in theaters cinema, they should not be able to participate in the Cannes Film Festival, and therefore not in any other.

To avoid the same talk every year and to close the subject definitively, the Cannes Festival changed its rules so that only films that had previously been trained in French cinemas, could participate in the festival, something that both Netflix and other streaming video services, logically, do not plan to do in the short term, and much less at the long.

But that does not mean that the greats cannot screen their films during the Festival, even if they don't enter the contest. At the moment, the Cannes Festival has been the first to take the initiative in this regard, but we hope it will be the only one and that over time, it will be forced to change the bases of the contest again, since the future of many great films , and not so great, it may go through streaming video services.

Let's hope that the rest of the film festivals do not choose the path that Cannes seems to have taken, since through this medium, you can find very high quality material whose only option to be able to produce your films is through this type of platform , much more open and willing to bet on new talents.

Competition is fine for all areas, except for film and TV, which has to be a monopoly of mediocrity.
