Five ideas Windows 10 should adopt from the competition

Windows 10 is each day closer to the end user. This fact cannot be denied. Practically every day new information appears about what Windows 10 will be and what it will not, and in some of these news you get a pleasant surprise. For example, it was recently learned that Windows 10 would have a notification center, something that has long been the norm on Linux desktops.

However, and although it is a good idea, for Windows 10 to finally become a much more usable, user-friendly and efficient operating system, perhaps they should take a further step forward. That is why we have prepared this list with Five ideas Windows 10 should adopt from the competition.

You don't have to look far to see examples that this makes sense. Many Linux distributions are free for users, and according to businessmen like Mark Shuttleworth (great boss of Canonical, Ubuntu's mother company) the money is not in the operating system, but in offering technical support through professionals specialized in said system (which is where Ubuntu gets a large part of its income).

Why can't they take a similar stance at Microsoft? It is difficult to say, and more if we consider that if we buy a Windows Phone (with an operating system with a proprietary license) we don't pay an extra by the operating system. The same happens with Android.

Free updates

Since it was commented for the first time that the update to Windows 10 could be free for Windows 8 users, this issue has been around. At Apple they offer free updates to an operating system to owners who have already purchased a Mac. On Linux if you have a version of, for example, OpenSUSE, if a new one is released you can update the system without problems and without paying a penny. The world of desktop operating systems is changing and already not the redoubt for tyrannical manufacturers what was it. Companies must get closer to their users, and it is the current trend that is being followed.

App store on desktop

Both OS X and Linux in many cases incorporate an application store within the operating system. This is especially useful in order to have a easily accessible repository to find and install  , which saves a lot of time when compared to the task of looking for the program on the Internet, downloading and installing it.

With the application stores we also get rid of advertising, and this minimizes the chances of getting infected with malware. It should also allow adding trusted external repositories, such as GitHub or SourceForge, which would also help keep the installation of external programs safe.

Now if an app store is included their versions should be as up to date as possible. Taking the Ubuntu Software Center as an example, it is quite bizarre that their version of the Eclipse IDE is at 3.73 and that on the official page of the development environment they are already at 4.4.1. These aspects should be looked after more.

Continuity

At Microsoft they are obsessed with integrating all Windows devices through a single operating system. Of course, apart from that, something else would be needed. That is what Apple has achieved with Continuity, a tool that integrates iPhone or iPad with user's iMac or MacBook and that allows to consult through the computer notifications that reach the user on the phone and vice versa.

That Microsoft came up with something similar to integrate all their devices would be a giant step and something very necessary, since more and more users demand to be able to interact from their computer with their mobile terminals.

New visual design

This last point may also have to do more with what Apple has done with Yosemite, where they have washed the face of the interface of user and icons, giving them a more flat which seems to be very fashionable lately.

The truth is that in Windows, except for a couple of minor changes, since Windows Vista we have not had a redesign of the interface or icons, something that given current design trends maybe you should check out Microsoft.

So far our five proposals that Windows 10 is more valued by the user community, in addition to making it more efficient and usable. If you would add any more or you do not agree with the ones we propose, leave us a comment with your opinion.
