How will the YouTube offline videos function work?

At Blumex, a few months ago, we informed you that YouTube had decided to leave its thoughts behind and change its way of thinking by allowing mobile device users to play videos without an Internet connection. The policy of this Google service months before was that you could not cache a video on any device, so it forced applications such as mctube to be updated to eliminate this function that YouTube adopts years later: viewing videos without internet connection for 2 days.

And it is that, as the web comments AllThingsD, YouTube partners have already received an email in which the YouTube team tells them about this new offline video feature. After the jump I am going to leave you the key ideas of how this new feature works and the email itself.

The key points of the offline videos that YouTube offers

As you will be able to verify later, YouTube has lightened its privacy policies on videos allowing users to view any YouTube video (unless the user does not allow it) without a fixed Internet connection for a maximum of 48 hours. Let's see some interesting points of this feature that will arrive on mobile devices in November:

  • Availability: It will be available in any YouTube application with the latest version that will be launched in November.
  • What videos ?: We can view any type of video except for pay channels and videos that do not have this function activated (if the owner wants it).
  • How?: Simply by clicking on "Add to device" we can enjoy the video as many times as we want for 48 hours.

Here you have the email itself:

Dear partner:

We are writing to inform you about a new feature scheduled for release in November that affects your content. This functionality is part of ongoing changes to give users more opportunities to enjoy videos and channels on YouTube mobile. The functionality is rolling out with all partners enabled but you can disable it now if you wish. Below is more information about the functionality and instructions on how to disable it.

What's happening

In the YouTube application, users will be able, through "add to device" functionality available in videos and playlists, to designate certain content that can be viewed for a short period of time when an Internet connection does not available. With this, if a user experiences a loss of connectivity, they will still be able to watch the videos they have added to their devices for a limited period of up to 48 hours. If the device is offline for more than 48 hours, the content will not be viewable offline until the device is reconnected. Once connected, the offline window refreshes and the viewer is able to see the content again.

How does it work for viewers?

From the viewing page through the "add to device" functionality, viewers will be able to designate certain content that can be viewed for a short period of time when they do not have connectivity. The moment the user no longer has connectivity, they will be able to view the videos and playlists that they have added to their device by accessing the videos through an "on device" section.

How does it work for partners: tips and statistics?

Google ads will run relative to the content, and the views will be added to the total count. Please note that other ad formats that will not be supported, and rental or purchase videos will not be included in this functionality.
All content is activated. But you can disable it now.
