Spain could be chosen to host the TMT, the most powerful telescope on the planet

TMT

Many years ago, I think I remember that it was at the end of 2014, when the creation of the TMT o Thirty Meter Telescope, a most powerful telescope ever built that was originally going to be located atop Mount Mauna Kea. Unfortunately, since the beginning of the project, those responsible for it have encountered many problems, among them the fact that this mountain is considered sacred to the inhabitants of Hawaii.

At this point, tell you that the project could begin thanks to the fact that the Hawaii Directorate of Natural Resources gave permission to build in that area, after an intense legal fight it was the Hawaii Supreme Court at the end of 2015 that ended of cancel the building permit which means that the project had to be suspended, until now.

The TMT could finally be located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands.

After the cancellation of the construction permits and because the betrothal of the International Observatory TMT have not been able to reach an agreement with the inhabitants of the area, the project has remained blocked since 2014. As a detail, let me tell you that we are talking about a investment of 1.400 million dollars that could reach the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands.

As a detail, tell you that despite the fact that the Canary Islands are considered the second best place in the world to house a telescope of these characteristics, just after Mauna Kea, the truth is that the project must in turn face several problems such as may be the 2.000 meter elevation loss which, as has already been announced, would mainly affect the range resolution and the mid-infrared wavelengths necessary to observe galactic centers. Due precisely to these problems, those responsible for the TMT have not yet guaranteed their new location 100% since they must first recalculate benefits and costs that this change would entail.
