When does Christmas really start?

Good news! The eternal debate about the beginning of Christmas has been resolved. We already know the exact date on which you can start decorating your living room without worrying about what your family and friends may say. Thanks to the innovative algorithm SANTA Index of Sonos, created to measure the levels of "Christmas euphoria", it has been possible to predict the exact date on which these holidays officially begin in Spain. In this case, everything points to November 22.

The algorithm has been analyzing Jingle Waves or “Christmas Waves” (a dataset, streams, social media discussions, and searches for holiday music and movies) since October to conclude that Spaniards are already fully immersed in the festive feeling that accompanies Christmas.

Thats not all. The SANTA Index also leaves us some very surprising information about the annual race for the Christmas hit worldwide. This year, despite what we are used to, Mariah Carey is fighting for number one with Wham! and Michael Bublé:

  • “It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Michael Bublé unseated the legendary hit “All I Want For Christmas” by Mariah Carey in October. However, Mariah finally managed to prevail after the viral video of her under the slogan “It's time”, with a 240% increase in searches and reproductions of her song.
  • In the first weeks of November, Wham! managed to get close to Mariah after a 75% increase in the volume of data collected, reaching number one, even if only for one day.
  • In contrast, the fourth song in the race for number one, “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms, has only generated 22% of Christmas Waves for the algorithm.
