arm presents its new 7 nanometer chips exclusively for high-end smartphones

Arm

The latest presentation organized by Arm It has left us with quite interesting news, on the one hand and no less special, the company has decided that the time had come to update its corporate logo, leaving aside that name that we all knew, always presented with capital letters to move to a much more logo modern and updated to the times. On the other hand, and perhaps the most interesting part of the entire presentation, nothing less than three new chips manufactured in 7 nm that promise high performance.

As the title of this entry says, once they reach the market, as is very predictable, they will do so together with the new generation of high-end smartphones that is to come. Not surprisingly, with these new processors, from arm, it has been guaranteed that it will offer a performance capable of surpassing several of the processors that are on the market today and that, at the time, were designed to be used in laptops. In other words, arm promises us a processor for smart phones capable of outperforming laptops.

arm presents during its last conference the Cortex-A76 CPUs, Mali-G76 GPUs and the Mali-V76 video processor

armCPU Cortex-A76

At first glance this may seem like a novelty without too much importance since, by nomenclature it can lead us to confusion, especially if we take into account that, at this time, a little less than a year ago, the Cortex-A75 was presented in society. On a technical level the differences between this new version and the previous one are many, especially if we take into account that the Cortex-A76 debuts high-performance microarchitecture designIn other words, we are talking about a completely new processor that has been designed and manufactured completely from scratch by the company.

At this point I have to confess that in arm they have been very 'ready'Regarding its presentation since, instead of comparing this Cortex-A76 with its immediately previous one, something that finally and as you can see in the graph on these lines if they have done, they have introduced the Cortex in it -A73. Regarding this, the Cortex-A76 can offer up to 200% more performance while, compared to the Cortex-A75, the performance grows by 35% and the energy consumption is reduced by 40%Figures that, as you can see, are very interesting, especially understanding that this processor is going to be used on mobile devices.

Arm has given the Cortex-A76 a very special design so that in it you can run a single core at full speed indefinitely. This means that we can finally achieve a much more consistent performance in workloads that demand maximum performance. Another very interesting point is that this processor continues to be compatible with DynamIQ technology, which allows the lower consumption Cortex-A55 to be used within a cluster of heterogeneous CPUs, systems that offer good performance to low-cost SoCs.

GPU Mali-G76

As we said at the beginning of this post, another of the novelties presented has been the Mali-G76 GPU, a model that, according to the specifications, continues to bet on the bifrost architecture used by the G52 and G72 but which, for this occasion, has evolved thus allowing a 1 times higher performance improvement. Thanks to the use of 5 nanometers, the Mali-G7 offers a 30% reduction in energy consumption, something that should translate into devices with greater autonomy despite the fact that, thanks to performance, games can be much better in terms of graphic quality and dynamism.

The real intention that arm has with the launch of this new GPU is to achieve, or at least that is how they have expressed it, that a much larger variety of terminals can run high-end games which, as you surely well know, have much higher demands in terms of graphic consumption as well as CPU. Another very interesting point for the adoption of this chip by manufacturers is that thanks to it they can be executed in their terminals applications that integrate augmented or virtual reality functions.

mali-v76

Mali-V76 VPU

Last but not least we have to talk about Mali-V76 VPU, a new video processor that stands out from the rest of the arm range for incorporating a new codec capable of decoding a single 8K 60fps UHD signal at the same time or, this is how it has been announced, up to four 4K streams at 60fps simultaneously.

To put this in perspective, tell you that the new Mali-V76 is capable of doubling in terms of performance the capacity that the Mali-V61 presents, being, in addition, capable of encode video in 8K at 30fps. At first glance, the truth is that this performance can be, at least, excessive although very interesting if, as is the case, manufacturers begin to use this processor in televisions and helmets both for virtual reality and augmented reality.
