Create a search engine key on our Windows computer

Create a key with Google

We suggest that you give great importance to the article that we will mention at this time, because with it, they arrive a lot of tricks when trying to get a single target. It will propose to assign a search engine to any of the keys on our Windows personal computer.

In other words, every time we press a key (the one that we will program right now), the Internet browser will immediately open with the search engine that is the default in Windows. For this we will support a simple tool that you can use completely free, and a few tips (tricks) that you can easily follow step by step.

Why have a search engine key on your computer?

First of all, we must suggest to the reader that the search engine that we will use in this tutorial will be Google.com, although everyone can prefer any other that is to their liking, being for this Yahoo.com, Bing.com between others a few more. If we are going to try to justify the task that we have proposed ourselves, we could comment on this in the following way:

  1. There are many function keys in Windows that we do not use at any time.
  2. Chromebooks replaced the "Caps Lock" key with a "Google search."
  3. The first thing we do when we open the browser is go to the default search engine.

There may be many other reasons that will surely come to your mind, although the ones proposed by us may be those with the greatest incidence in a large number of users addicted to the web; there are many comments that suggest the function key F10 (in our opinion it would be F9) and Caps Lock (for capital letters) almost useless, which is the reason why Google would have removed this last key from their personal computers (the ChromeBooks).

Assigning F9 to Caps Locks

The first thing we are going to try to do at this point is a reassignment of our "keyboard map"; If we previously suggested 2 important keys on our computer that we surely do not use very frequently, they will be the ones that we will use as a first step for this reassignment; For this we will use a simple tool, which has the name of SharpKeys and that you can download it completely free from the official website of its author.

Sharp Keys 01

The image that we have placed in the upper part represents the interface of said tool, where we only have to click on the button that says «Add»So that all the keys on the map are shown.

Sharp Keys 02

We will immediately jump to another part of the interface of this tool, where 2 fully identified columns will be displayed; the one that is located towards the left side will be the one that we will use to find our Caps Lock key, having to select it. In the right column we have find function key F10 or F9, which will depend on the use we give to any of them. Finally, we just have to close the window by clicking OK to return to the original window.

Once here, the assignment that we are about to make regarding the re-mapping of our keyboard will be shown at the top. We will only have to select the button that sayse "Write to Registry" so that the changes are written to the Windows registry. For these changes to take effect, it is necessary that we close the session and in the best case, that we restart our Windows operating system.

Creating our search key Google.com

We have already taken the first step before, something that does not represent a great effort but rather, knowing how to creatively and intelligently handle a free application. Now we will dedicate ourselves to program a specific key to function as a shortcut to the search engine of Google.com, although we want to emphasize that the user can decide to choose any other that is of their preference.

What we are going to do first is go to the Windows desktop, having to click with the right button of the mouse on any empty space and then we will choose «new shortcut»From the context menu.

google key 01

In the first window that appears, instead of pressing the button «Browse»We simply have to write the URL of Google.com in the empty space and then click on the button«siguiente«.

google key 02

The next window will help us to place the name of this shortcut, our suggestion being «search key for google«; later we will only have to accept the changes with «finalize»For the window to close.

google key 03

Again we must look for the shortcut that we have created on the Windows desktop, which we will have to click with the right button to choose its «We take care of your rental property in Valencia. »From the context menu.

From the new window that appears, we must pay attention to the tab that says «web document«; Right there, each parameter of the direct access that we have created will already be defined, only missing the assignment of our function key, which in this case will be F10 (F9 or the one we assign to Caps Lock). To do this, we only have to place the cursor pointer in the empty space and then press the respective key so that it appears there.

google key 04

A little further down this presents a small button that will help us change icon shape, something you can do as we explained in a previous article. Finally, you just have to press on the key that says «OK»For changes to take effect immediately.

Because we resigned our keyboard, every time we press the Caps Lock key we will immediately jump to the Internet browser and specifically to the search engine that we have chosen according to this tutorial.
