Firefox shortcuts for faster browsing

Chrome and Firefox - two of the most popular web browsers - have very similar keyboard shortcuts, but if you were to compare the two, Firefox has a few extras, some of which you can only use in Chrome and other browsers. Aside from the normal keyboard shortcuts for navigating web pages, or just using basic Firefox functions, here is a list of ten shortcuts that work in the latest version of Firefox (and probably all future versions to come. ).

Menu Bar - Quick View (Alt)

One of the many things that are better about Chrome is that it practically eliminates unnecessary toolbars and menu bars. With Firefox, which is more feature-rich, that's a bit difficult to do. The menu bar is still indispensable, but it can be hidden. The problem that arises with this is that you have to hide / show that after each use. What you can do instead is keep hidden and use the Alt key to momentarily show.

View Plugins page (Ctrl + Shift + a)

Firefox quite possibly has the most sophisticated browser for page add-ons that you will have to find and get hold of, which you often might need to visit the add-on page. There's a quick way to access that too - hitting Ctrl + Shift + A opens the page or switches to this if it's already open.

Quick Search (`)

Quick is basically with the search bar (Find another depending on the page) available in all browsers. To call up the Quick Find bar, press the backslash key (`) or if it doesn't respond, hit the forward slash (/) and the bar will appear in the search bar it usually does. It can be fired by pressing the Esc key.

Access the Bookmarks Menu (Alt + B)

As mentioned above, Firefox allows you to hide the menu bar to save space. You can also hide the bookmarks bar if you'd like a little more space, and still access your bookmarks quickly. Just hit Alt + B and the menu bar will reappear with bookmarks selected. From here, you can browse your favorites or open the bookmark manager. The bookmark manager can also be called by pressing Ctrl + B, and it works the same in Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera. In Chrome, the shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + B to show / hide the bookmarks bar, and Ctrl + Shift + O to show / hide the Bookmarks Manager.

Private Navigation Toggle (Ctrl + Shift + P)

Many modern browsers have a private browsing mode that hides from being followed and also hides you online Chrome indiscretions.Unlike (and possibly others) you cannot have a normal browsing session and a private session at the same time in Firefox. What you can do however, is easy to switch between the two using the Ctrl + Shift + P shortcut. When switching to private browsing, current tabs are saved and using this shortcut again restores all saved tabs in a normal session.

Firefox Home Page (Alt + Home)

If you have configured the new tab page to always open a blank page instead of the Firefox home page, you may find that there is no easy way to visit if you want quick access to one of the options there, or access to the sync function. Fortunately, though, you can open Firefox's main page in the current tab by pressing Alt + Home.

Start download from a selected link (Alt + Enter)

If you use the Tab key to navigate links, you will notice that you can select the download links. In Firefox, if a download link is selected and Alt + Enter is pressed, the download will begin. It doesn't work for download buttons though, only text-based download links so compared to the rest, this is somewhat limited. Still, you can save yourself the trouble of right clicking on the link and clicking "Save link as ...".

These are just a few of the shortcuts that make Firefox easier to use. We find that many old shortcuts no longer work in the latest version of Firefox and that means that some features have been lost.
