Internet is the day to day for many people, not only in their work but also in daily life and both users and companies increasingly demand greater speed and security. For some time now, the construction of submarine cables is no longer a dependency of telecommunications companies and currently it is the technology companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook…) who are taking over, a logical change in part because their services are the ones that consume the most bandwidth in the world.

A little over a month ago, a submarine cable was inaugurated across the Pacific that connects the United States with Japan and where Google was also part of the project. The speed of this cable reaches 60 Tbps, but that speed remains in diapers if we compare it with the new submarine cable that this time will link Los Angeles with Hong Kong and which will be in charge of Facebook and Google. This new cable will reach 120 Tbps, but it is still not the fastest transoceanic cable in the world, since the record is currently held by Microsoft and Facebook with the MAREA cable whose speed is 160 Tbps.

This new submarine cable, whose main supporters are Google and Facebook, will be made up of five pairs of fiber lines, each of 24 Tbps. Both companies reserve a couple of them while the others will be distributed by the rest of the companies involved in the construction of this 12.800 kilometer cable. The construction of this new cable will begin in 2018 and has an expected cost of 400 million dollars. Once the construction of this new cable is completed, Facebook and Google users will enjoy greater bandwidth in the Asia-Pacific region.
