How to burn a double layer DVD to a regular DVD

Un Double-layer DVD has a capacity of 8,5 GB while a normal DVD has a capacity of 4,7 GB, so
It is clear that we cannot directly record the content of a double layer DVD on a single layer DVD since we would be missing 3,8 GB of
Storage capacity.

UOnce this is clear, it is easy to understand that we only have three options to make the copy:

  1. Divide the double layer DVD into two normal ones. In this way we would have a total storage capacity of 9,4 GB, more than
Enough to save the 8,5GB DVD data.
  2. Delete some of the content until it reaches 4,7 GB of the normal DVD. This option is the least recommended since it implies the loss of
data and in most cases we need to burn the entire disc.
  3. Finally we can use a compression program to reduce the amount of data on the double layer DVD. In this way we will not lose
    part of the content.

SI discarded option 2, as it was impractical, we have two alternatives to burn the double DVD
layer in a normal one:

1 Option: Use this option if you want to burn a disc that contains files (like photos, documents, programs, etc).
In this way you will not lose data and you will have all your files safely. If you do not know how to burn a disc with files (data) in this link
you will learn to burn a data disc with nero.

3 Option: Choose this option to burn discs that contain audio files. video lesson that you can't split into multiple files. By
For example, if you have a movie from your vacation and it takes up more than 4,7 GB, you should use this option to be able to burn it on a single-layer DVD.
In this link you can see how record a
film with DVD Shrink
.

PLastly, just to clarify that to read a double layer DVD it is not necessary to have a double layer recorder.
All current DVD recorders read double layer DVDs, you only need a double layer recorder when you need to make a copy.
direct from a double layer DVD to a double layer DVD or when you are going to record more than 4,7 GB of data and want to have it on a single disc.

Hello RicardIf you want to burn an uncompressed double-layer DVD if you have to use another virgin double-layer DVD, with the nero you can burn it but I warn you one thing, desktop players do not usually read double-layer DVDs that are not original, that is In other words, an original film will read it to you without problems even if it is double layer, but if you make a copy, it will most likely not read it to you. Greetings.

Hello killer vinegar, and if I want to burn a whole double layer dvd without compressing or dividing as I do. I have to use another 8 gig dvd?

  3.   rafaas said

My problem is that after burning the 8,5 gig dvd, nothing appears on it. The nero tells me that I will not be able to see it in the windows explorer, but even opening it with the nero does not show me something. What can be?

Great explanation about double layer dvds, thanks.

Hello rafaas I do not know what the problem may be. The truth is that recording on double-layer DVD gives quite a few problems, especially compatibility. If you can avoid it, do not use double layer DVDs and record the content in two of a layer or compress. If I find something related to your problem I will let you know. Greetings.

Hi, my problem is that when I backup a movie to a double layer DVD, it burns well, but it is not compatible with many desktop DVD players and what is worse, that my own recorder is not capable to read it after engraving.
This has happened to me with Fortis DVD + R DL brand dvd's
However, with the RiDisc DVD + R DL brand, it is not compatible with many players but my recorder can read it to me.
Come on, marks from his father and mother ... haha
My player is a double layer LG.
    Thank you!!!

Richard, your problem is everyone's, there is hardly any compatibility between double-layer DVDs and home players. The thing about the tape recorder is weirder. Maybe you should update the firmware.

  13.   Juanjo said

Why can't a non-original double layer DVD player read? I do not get it.

  14.   Killer Vinegar said

Well, I don't understand it either, but that's the way it is. Come on, I have tried 6 different players of the family and there is no way.

my question is whether a conventional DVD burner can burn double layer DVD, I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H30L ATA Device drive

  17.   Killer Vinegar said

Jose the recorder must be ready, not just anyone, the thing is that today almost all of them are prepared. I looked for information about yours but there is no way to find anything, it would be best to call where you bought it and ask. Let's see if I will shortly make a tutorial on how to know the compatibility of the recorders.
