How to put your mp3s with the same volume and avoid volume increases between song and song

iPod Shuffle red

EThe other day I told you how annoying it is to be listening to music with an MP3 player and that suddenly when changing songs increase the volume enormously. If the change is very abrupt, it can even damage our ears since there are players that are capable of generating a great power output and in any case it is not advisable to subject our ears to such a rate of auditory stress.

TIt can also happen that you record a CD with a compilation of your favorite music and that when you put it at a party you have to be there all the time turning the volume up or down depending on the theme that sounds as the output intensity varies. This, like the previous example of the MP3 player, is due to the fact that the audio files (mp3) are recorded at different output intensities and therefore each one sounds at a different volume regardless of whether you change the volume or not. on your player.

PSo that this difference between the strength with which the different songs sound does not continue to bother you, what you have to do is normalize the sound of all MP3. Normalizing the sound is simply putting all the files with the same output level and therefore all the songs will sound at the same volume. This way you no longer have to go up or down the music after each song.

MP3Gain icon

Un free program to normalize MP3s is MP3 Gain And it is also very easy to use and you can put it in Spanish. You can read the MP3Gain installation manual that I published the other day here in VinagreAssino.com. When you have it installed we can start with this mini manual to put all your music at the same volume and forget about those uncomfortable annoyances. Remember that MP3 is free and that you do not have to pay to download or use it, so you have no excuse for your MP3 to continue playing each one with different volume.

Si already have MP3Gain installed and you have put it en español Let's see how to normalize the audio of your songs.

1º) Open the program, a window will appear in which you have to look at the three fields indicated in the following image.

The three fields of MP3Gain

Headphones for listening to music

2º) The two fields above, «Add File (s)» and «Add Folder» allow us to add the files one by one or add a complete folder to normalize the audio of all the mp3 files contained in it. The other field called "Normal Volume Target" allows us to modify the output intensity of the MP3. The more decibels (dB) we put the louder the songs will sound later. The program sets "89,0 dB" by default and you can raise or lower this figure at will, but before doing so, think that if you raise this figure too high and you are in the habit of listening to your music with the volume of your player turned up, you can damage your ears. As stated on this page about hearing loss, the harmful effects of noise (from a legal point of view) start from 85 decibels (dB). So do not raise this figure too much, for the tutorial I am going to leave it at the default value «89 decibels» but remember that It is NOT good that you use your player at full volume.

3º) In this case we will see how to normalize all the themes in a folder at once so that you click on «Add Folder». A window called "Search for folder" will open in which you will have to locate the folder that contains the files you want to normalize. When you have found it, click on "Accept".

Searching for folder on hard drive

4º) Now you will see the selected mp3 files in the MP3Gain window. To normalize the sound we must first analyze the audio tracks that we have added. To do so, click on the button «Analyze Track» and the analysis process will begin.

Analyzing mp3 tracks

5º) When the process is finished, the result of the analysis will appear on the screen. If the song is below the volume you have selected, a positive track gain will appear and if it is above it will be negative, in any case the program will raise or lower the volume of the songs until they equalize (normalize them).

File analyzed by MP3Gain

If you look at the image there are a couple of themes that have a Red "Y" under the column "clip (Track)" this indicates that due to the increase in intensity that these specific songs are going to suffer, some distortion may occur at the points in the song where the volume reaches its maximum intensity. In principle, this problem does not usually bother too much, and many times it is not noticed, but if you prefer, lower the figure in the "Normal Volume Target" box and analyze again.

6º) When you are done click on the "Track Gain" button and all songs will be turned at the same volume.

Changing the volume to mp3s

Y with that you are done. If after playing the songs you think that the sound has been too weak or too loud, change the output decibel value and go back to point four of this tutorial. I hope that from now on you do not have frights listening to your favorite music and be careful with your ears, do not crush them they are for life. A sour greeting.

Just this comes to me! I have several live recitals of electronica music that come down from the air that could use a "leveled" volume !! ... Some time ago they had re-approved the Adobe Audition, I admit that it is great, but very complicated for me, I did not have patience 🙁 Greetings murderous vinegar !.

Hi Sappy_Girl, glad to see you here. The truth is that Adobe Audition is like killing mosquitoes with gunshots. To level the audio with MP3 Gain you have plenty and it is also free and easy. A greeting.

You went overboard with this tutorial, but please tell me where the songs go with the volume adjusted, that is to say in which folder or folder the ones I adjust are saved, or if they are automatically regulated within the same source folder.
Thanks and sorry for the ignorance is that I am new using these things.

  5.   Vinegar said

The same files that you have are adjusted, that is, the original mp3s are modified and remain in the same folder (folder).

Thanks for your help, the truth is this was a very uncomfortable problem for the ears.

I have a doubt, when that "Y" comes out, it will only be distorted in songs that have low sound and when they are raised the defect will be seen, but that happens in songs that have high volume and is reduced to normal, will there be a defect there?

  13.   Angela said

Well, this «Y» comes out under clipping

Hello, excellent program. I needed this for a long time and found it.

One question: with this MP3gain we improve the volume, but how do I do with the bitrates? I understand that the more bitrates an mp3 has, the better the sound quality. Over there I downloaded a program that improves the bitrate, but I have not tried it yet, the bad thing is that it is a 15-day trial. Do you have a program that works for that and that does it in a massive way too?
I wait your answer thank you….

  22.   Killer Vinegar said

Walter note that you cannot improve the bitrate (the transfer rate) from a tablet. The bitrate can only be reduced but not improved (increased).

  23.   George said

How good is this program? Now finally I will no longer have to lower and raise the volume of my favorite songs, you had a good vinagrillo… from Lima a greeting… ..thank you

  24.   Walter said

Thank you Vinegar for your help. Note that with the program "Mp3 Workshop" I made some adjustments to some mp3 songs and "increased" the bitrate, because they had 128 kb and now when playing them, 192 kb appears (what I put). Then with Mp3 Gain, I adjust the volume.
I don't really know if that supposed increase in bitrates makes a difference, but they seem to sound better with all the adjustments made. Thanks once again…

the truth is, the program is cool but I wanted to know how I can copy the songs to my mp3 player or to copy them to a cd
is that I have not been able or if there is a folder where all the scans that are converted go well that is my doubt if someone can answer it my mail is xxxxx

  26.   wacostaf said

I normalize them, adjust the volume manually and clean them in Sound forge 9. Then I save them to mp3 320 and apply mp3 gain. Perfect solution.

It really is a very good program.
what I am, I work as a private dj, and it gave me a bit of pain as some musical themes made the speakers screw up, and logically the possible aviria of the integrated audio.

I also sell compilations in mp3, a few weeks ago and the clients congratulate me, because their music sounds good at all times.

    excellent all ...

    Thank you

Perfect what they say, but I have followed their instructions and I have had a small problem and that is that approximately 20% of the songs tells me the MP · Gain that they have a problem (an error says) and does not normalize their volume, so I eliminated them, but I am very sorry because I have eliminated many that I really like. How can I do to normalize them and not have to delete them?
