How to burn a movie with DVD shrink

Hoy let's see how you can record a movie that occupies more than 4,7 GB. If we have a movie on a double layer DVD we already know It can contain up to 8,5 GB, therefore if we want to burn it on a normal DVD (that is, a single layer) we have to divide it into two parts or compress it.

En this time we are going to see how a movie is compressed to fit on a conventional 4,7 GB DVD. For
To be able to compress the film, we will use a free and very effective software called DVD shrink that will automatically compress the film to less than 4,7 GB.

1º) If you don't have the program, you can download the latest version of DVD shrink from here. The latest version is in English but you will see that it is very easy to use.

2º) Once you have downloaded it you have to install it. When you finish the installation a window will appear like
is:

3º) As you can see in the following image, when you open the program, the default option is "Full Disc"
This tells us that we are going to copy all the data of our movie without deleting any file so that we will obtain a copy with them
contents than the original.

4º) Now you must put the DVD with the movie in the DVD reader unit, and then we have to access it from the program.
To find the movie, we will click on the button «Open Disc» (open disc).

5º) A new window will open in which the first reader unit you have installed appears. Click on the arrow
which is on your right and a list will be displayed with all the reading units on your computer.

6º) Choose the unit where the film is and click on «OK». DVD shrink will begin to analyze the disc and the
next window.

7º) The analysis usually takes a little less than a minute, although this will depend on the power of your computer. When the
analysis is complete, the following screen will appear where you can see that DVD shrink sets the "Automatic" compression option by default.
Under this option you will see a percentage that indicates the amount of information that remains compared to the original. In this case 70,8% indicates that the
video has been compressed 29,2%. Therefore we will have suffered a loss of quality equivalent to this 29,2%.

8º) In the previous image we can also see how of the 4.463 MB that the final DVD will have, only 3.296 MB will be
of the movie. The rest of the information will be occupied by the audio files and subtitles that will not undergo compression. Now what we must do is
click on the button «Backup!» (dumped to the hard disk), then a screen like the one in the following image will open. In it we must pay attention to
the area marked 2 called "Select target folder for DVD output file:" which means "Select the destination folder for DVD files".
Well then we will click on the little arrow on the right and select the folder in which we want the DVD to be dumped.

9º) We continue to look at the previous image this time in the area marked with 3 called "Select backup target"
which means that you select the type of output file. As we can see in the following image, by clicking on the right arrow
We will have two options to choose from: Hard Disk Folder or ISO Image File. If we chose Hard Disk Folder we would create a folder with all the
video files for later recording with a suitable program. But we are going to create a disk image and for that we are going to choose the
ISO Image File option, in this way we will create an image that will be stored on the hard disk.

10º) Keep in mind that in the 8th point, "Hard Disk Folder" came out by default and in the area marked with 2 it appeared
«Select target folder for DVD output file:», now when selecting «ISO Image File» in the area marked with 2 it will appear «Select target image file»
which means "Select the destination of the image file" so we must choose the place where we want the image to be saved. When we have
Once the location of the image has been chosen, we will click on "Accept" and the image will begin to be created as shown in the following screen.

11º) As a general rule, on a not very old computer, the image will be created in about 30 minutes as can be seen in the
previous image. After this time and if we have not had any problems, the following screen will appear informing you that the operation has
finished.

Bwell we have already managed to compress the image of the double layer DVD and we have created an image in a folder of our
HDD. Now all we have left is to record the image as you normally would. I personally use Nero and it is the one that I recommend.

EI hope this "Step by Step" has been helpful to you. See you soon!!

Hello, could you explain how the image is recorded when it is on the hard disk and what black you use.

  2.   Killer Vinegar said

Hi JunRo, saving the image once you have it on the hard drive is the easiest part of the process. I use Nero to record the image, all you have to do is determine what type of image it is: iso image, nrg image or cue image, and select it when recording. Let's see if I can and during the week I put a step-by-step tutorial to know how to burn the image on a DVD. Greetings.

Hi Kiko, when you compress to decrease the size of the movie, only the video is compressed, the audio is not compressed. I'll tell you this so you know that if your compression drops below 70% you may have to delete some of the audio tracks. Just by doing this you will see a quite significant change, the compression may change to 80% just by deleting an audio track, especially if the track is Dolby DTS.

About optimal compression of the DVDShrink I can only tell you that the higher the value the better, do not go below 70% and from 80% up you will have more than enough quality.

There will be more demanding people who will not want to go below 90% but for my taste with 80% you already have quality to spare.
    Greetings.

  4.   Kiko said

Hey vinegar as far as I can compress with shrink, I mean what is the percentage of compression that I can use with the program so as not to lose quality. There is some safe limit to this. Thank you.

  5.   rolando said

Hello! How do you install an image recorded on a CD? I downloaded a program that was like disc image and when I want to open it, the nero and a red warning appear. Thank you

Hello rolando Let's see if you can put what notice the program gives you and I'll see how to help you. Greetings.

Hello oscar the error of "Cyclic redundancy" it is a very common mistake during recordings. It can happen by two things or because the disc is scratched or in bad condition or because the quality of the disc is very bad, in case of being a copy.
The only thing you can do is try to clean the disc a bit or see if another recorder or reader with a better laser is capable of reading it. Greetings.

  8.   oscar said

a query you do when you get a cyclical blush error ... I think it says so ...
thanks… .I have tried shrink and decripter in both it appears… I don't know what to do anymore… the original disk is double layer porsiaca.

Thanks for your information. My problem is the following. They brought me a film from Spain, region 2 and I live in the USA, region 1. How can I remove the protection and change it to region 1? I want to make a compressed copy and another with original quality. Later with Nero I will change it to the American system.
Thank you in advance for your help

  10.   Killer Vinegar said

Licino, if you say you can pass it with Nero to NTSC, use the DVDshrink as indicated in the manual and then convert it with Nero, right?

  11.   Wilson said

Thanks for all this information, well I have a movie in image, but for trying to reproduce it on my pc, if I could reproduce it but with windows media 10, but the audio was gone, my question is, because it is a direct image to the hard disk hides the audio elsewhere and I couldn't play it? It will be because I only could with windows media and I could not reproduce the image with power dvd? or finally when I do the test with the dvd Shrink I will have the movie as the original.

Thank you ... I thank you, answer me with a copy of my email if you don't mind

  12.   Killer Vinegar said

Hello Wilson, look at this is a blog, and the normal thing is to answer things here so that those who have the same doubts as you can see what the problem may be. So I'll answer you here and I hope you don't mind.

The reasons why you are not listening to the audio can be several, perhaps when transferring the movie to the hard disk you forgot the audio or perhaps you lack a codec to be able to hear it.

The best thing is that you do the test with Dvd shrink and you will tell me. Greetings.

I am new to this forum. I don't understand much about computers, but I like it. I have problems when I want to burn a movie with dvd-shrink 3.2. I get a message that there are I / O problems. How can I solve that. Thank you all. Can you help me?

  14.   Killer Vinegar said

Hi Maite, look at that problems that usually happen when the movie you want to record is a bit scratched or dirty. Try cleaning the surface of the DVD. And if it doesn't come out, explain your problem a little more.

  15.   seriously said

man, after nero, I can't play the dvd neither with power dvd 7 nor with window media nor with acer arcade

Thanks for all this info. Extraordinary. It seems from a company.
    Now two questions.
1 I do not have the DVD in the plastic support, but the complete ripped DVD and downloaded from the web to my hard disk. They are 6 gigs (not ISO, but the files), how can I transfer it to a normal DVD?
2 When I put a dual rw dvd in the drive (which says read / write dual dvd) the blessed "cherry" (Windows XP) is "cherry". When I take out the dvd everything is normal
    Thanks for your help

  20.   Killer Vinegar said

Hi Antón, the first thing you have to do is follow the tutorial but choosing the Hard Disk Folder option instead of ISO Image File in point 9. So you can compress it to a normal DVD and burn it.

The second no idea, things of Guindos 😉 Greetings

  21.   Killer Vinegar said

It may be because of the quality of the DVDs, some like Princo tend to give enough problems.

Hello, after converting a movie recorded with the video camera to iso, I try to pass the 2nd one and it gives me the error invalid navigation structure, can you help me? It is about making several copies of the DVD of the camera for several parents since it is about the movie where our children are dressed as Papanoel this Christmas, Thank you

  27.   Killer Vinegar said

@nicole you just have to open nero and choose to burn image to disk.

@Antonio the error you get is because you have not created a correct DVD structure and it will not be read on the players. What you have to do is convert the content of your camera into a DVD using Nero or similar.

  28.   Luis said

Hello, how can I transfer a video downloaded from youtube to dvd, I have done it by passing it as data and it does not reproduce the image, thanks

  29.   Killer Vinegar said

Luis you must first convert it to a format recognizable by your DVD and this will depend on what your DVD can read and what cannot.

  30.   MARY said

  31.   Vinegar said

Mary maybe there was a crash during dvd shrink dump. You should repeat the process.

  32.   MARY said

Do you think it is that or a problem with the installation of the dvd shrink or the power dvd, in my work I do the same procedure in dvd shrink and if it is seen with the power dvd, don't you think it could be something else and like what? Thank you

  33.   Vinegar said

I prefer what I told you, in any case you could also try reinstalling everything.

I tried to do the first steps but I stayed at 4 because when I try to give it "open disc" it won't let me. I get a warning window saying: »dvd srink encountered an error and cannot continue» «invalid dvd navigation structure» am and I don't know why! (haha) the dvd is double layer and I want to pass it on to another but it is not double layer, it is video ...

    I hope you can help me or someone can guide me hehe, because this is not my thing ... ^^;

    Thanks! a greeting!

  40.   Vinegar said

Koby the problem is that the DVD you are trying to burn, even if it works in some players, does not have a correct DVD structure, so it cannot be dumped with DVD Shrink.

  48.   Vinegar said

Santiago the re author is used to extract only a part of the dvd. If you want to edit you can use the Movie Maker that comes with XP.

    Hello:
When the Dvd Shrink burned 99% of the disc, it remains there without giving me any message and I have to reset the machine because the recorder is checked at high speed and does not close the disc. I already tried lowering the recording speed and it continues, not always causing the same problem. Logically I ruin the DVDs. I use Verbatim -R discs. With Easy CD / DVD Creator 6 nothing happens nor with Nero 7 Premium, either. I have a very fast PC. The only signal I can give you is that this problem started when I changed the recorder, the other one was recording at 8X was an LG, this one now records at 16X, it is a Sansung SH-S203B (WriteMaster). Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I am inclined because it is the DVD Shrink 3.2 program …… ..Uds? Thank you very much for your attention.

Hello, first of all, congratulations on your very good and useful blog.
Well my problem is the following: when creating the ISO cn dvd shrink saves it as an .iso file, but with an icon and rar format, I mean I can open it and see it inside the folders, which is not very usual, so se, in the ISO files, now when burning it to a DVD with nero, it doesn't work like the original version since it just won't open.
    well, hopefully you have answers
    Thank you

    what am I doing wrong

  52.   Veronica said

Hello, I would like you to specify something about the audio. I follow all the steps and the automatic compression leaves the video at 100%, therefore, the audio is not recorded from what you say, right? I do not know if you have to uncheck the audio boxes that are below the video percentage or leave them checked. I manage to do all the steps and when I record the film to DVD with the shrink, nothing is heard. And when I compress it and save it on the pc to record it with the black, being compressed (I can see the symbol of the bound book volumes) it does not let me record it. He does not recognize it. Does it have to be decompressed? All the best. Veronica.

I use the shrink. Thanks in advance for your reply, and greetings, Carlos.

  54.   Killer Vinegar said

Hi Carlos in the comment above I talk about disk images, if you create one with dvd shrink and read it with a virtual drive you will be able to see the dvd. In a couple of weeks the articles that explain it will be published.
