JPEG files will now be 35% lighter thanks to this Google software

JPEG

Google has just announced that a team made up of several of its engineers has managed to create what they themselves have dubbed as Biscuits, a software with which they have literally achieved reduce the size of JPEG files by 35%. The best thing about this algorithm is not that all types of images now occupy less on our hard drives, something that other algorithms already achieve, but that the image quality improves significantly.

Another point that is very important and that has been achieved with this software is that JPEG images compressed with Google's new Guetzli algorithm are completely compatible with all browsers, devices and even photo editing applications that exist today in the market, something that did not happen with other types of software, also previously developed by the company, such as WebP or WebM compression systems.

Google makes JPEG compressed images weigh less while improving their quality.

Going into the features present in this algorithm, as it has been published, apparently its developers have decided to focus on the compression quantization stage, that is to say, precisely in that process within the compression of an image where it is tried to reduce the enormous amount of disordered data present in an image to create ordered data. This process, in turn, often reduces color failures.

To achieve this a new internal algorithm called butteraugli which, in turn, is based on the human visual processing system to offer a higher image quality in all the details, thus achieving a more complete color approximation in the shot compared to the use of other encoders.
