Microsoft Edge joins the trend of using the Brotli compression algorithm

The Microsoft Edge browser, which is losing market share by leaps and bounds, still has a long way to go. One of the novelties that came with the launch of the first great Anniversary Update, were the extensions, extensions that greatly facilitate the usual use that we can make of the browser. At the moment the list of extensions is quite poor, not to say that we can count it on the fingers of one hand, but from Microsoft they continue to bet on it, they have no other choice despite the fact that Chrome has become the most used browser in the world, with more than 50% share.

The next big update, Creators Studio, will bring us news about Microsoft Edge again, news that has to do with the open source Brotli algorithm, a Open source algorithm created by Google and whose function is to improve the performance of browsers by compressing between 20 and 25% the pages that we download. For now, users of the Insider program can already try this new version of Edge that will hit the market next year, since it is included in the latest build that the manufacturer launched a few days ago, the last of the year.

Brotli is the successor to Zopfli, another Google compression algorithm also open source. This type of compression algorithms allows us to visit web pages faster than usual in addition to reducing data consumption, ideal for when we connect using a mobile connection. Since its launch, many browsers have been adopting this new algorithm and Edge could not do without it. If Microsoft wants to try to recover part of the 331 million users it has lost throughout the year, it is going to have to put the batteries and add more extensions or functions to get the attention of users again.
