The new WiFi standard promises to double its current speed

WiFi standard

We have had to wait a long time since back in 2009 they began to talk about a new WiFi standard that would literally, or at least they described it, revolutionize the wireless connections in our home. This new standard, known as WiGig and identified with the name of IEEE 802.11ad It was officially approved in 2013 and since then we have had to wait for the certification to finally be approved for the first devices to hit the market.

After more than three years of waiting since the standard was approved, finally The WiFi Alliance just announced today the official certification of the WiGig standard, a high-speed connection capable of reaching 8 Gbps in ideal conditions and in the first devices to reach the market, although, in the medium term, as advertised, this speed should reach 80 and 100 Gbps.

WiGig

Although WiGig doubles the speed, it has several limitations that we must take into account.

However, this standard also has its limitations since its conditions imply a very important detail and that is that WiGig is designed to be implemented in locations where there are no obstacles such as walls or large metal plates. Keep in mind that, devices cannot be more than 10 meters apart. As you can see, it seems like a fairly limited idea although it seems ideal to implement, for example, in rooms where 4K content is downloaded and consumed, data is transmitted wirelessly for virtual reality, shared access desktops, mobile phones, desktops ...

At this point, it should be noted that in order to reach these speeds, WiGig will use a new 60 GHz frequency band. This band stands out, among other things, for allowing a higher data throughput although, on the contrary, it has much less power than the most common bands with which it is also compatible, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz or directly the 900 MHz used by HaLow .
