As the months go by we see what the intentions of car companies when it comes to autonomous cars. It is true that technologies are still very much in their infancy. And it remains to be seen how administrations behave to adapt all public roads.
However, there are logical steps that we will surely see over the years. We refer to the elimination of some elements from inside the passenger compartment. If we look at the latest smart concept with its smart vision EQ Concept, we can see that elements such as the steering wheel or the pedals have been completely eliminated to make way for a large screen from which to control everything.
However, reputable brands such as Jaguar Land Rover are not resigned to the total elimination of such an essential element - currently - as the steering wheel. And that's where it was born the concept baptized as Sayer, in reference to one of the best known designers of the company between the 50s and 70s: Malcolm Sayer.
The idea of Jaguar Land Rover is this: in the future all cars will be fully autonomous. They will not need a driver to get around. It's more, there would be a network of autonomous cars in which the users few owned vehicles would have. The only element that would accompany the user at all times is the Sayer smart steering wheel. This steering wheel that would be accompanied by an artificial intelligence that would allow the client to request the service of any vehicle on the network, as well as help him in his agenda. This Sayer steering wheel would be attached to the cabin of each autonomous car and would take care of leisure during the trips, as well as manage the client's schedule and trips.
In the same way, like any concept, this Sayer flyer is one of the thousands of ideas that appear daily in the sector. Will we see it operational at some point? It is very possible not, but you cannot deny that the idea of looking like an F1 driver of the future with your own steering wheel is not attractive.
