Strider analysis

strider

Remakes, rescued sagas and many others that have been spoiled - there we have as examples resident evil o Silent Hill- are some of the constants that we have seen throughout the long generation of PlayStation 3 y Xbox 360. Capcom, of course, has not had a middle ground: the cases of Bionic Commando, which was quite a misstep, while DmCDespite the unbearable unjustified tantrums of some fans, it was a full-blown game.

Now it is the turn of the ninja with the laser katana: Strider. It has been 25 years of waiting to have a revision of the 1989 classic, which comes only through digital download -things of modernity- for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One y Xbox 360.

Capcom has entrusted to Double helix games (GI Joe: Rise of Cobra, Green Lantern, Silent Hill Homecoming, Killer Instinct…) The task of updating this classic from the arcade of the 80s, which had its own ports to consoles as old as the NES or the Sega Mega Drive, in addition to a second part that came out exclusively for the first PlayStation. For those who do not know StriderIts playable premises -like many games of the time- were based on a very tight difficulty with a gameplay that mixed action and 2D platforms.

The plot of Strider places us in an unpromising future where the Earth is being ruled with an iron hand under the tyranny of the known as Great teacher. A secret society of ninjas has decided to end the hegemony of the tyrant trying to assassinate him, and it will be Hiryu, the most prominent in the training programs, who must complete that task using their cypher, kunais and ninja skills while making their way through 2D metroidvania composition scenarios.

Clashes body to body are the most common playable knot in the game, where each enemy can demand to draw different strategies if we do not want them to become a real headache: and that is difficulty the game brings them to the usual standards of now, unearthing those games of cold sweats from the eighties arcades. Measured jumps, climbing walls, dodging shots and taking androids at the waist is the most common representation that you will see on the screen, although going into detail about the control, I have not finished convincing that the character can only be handled with the left stick, something that I find cumbersome for a game with a purely 2D gameplay.

Although the scenarios may contain some hidden hole hiding an unlockable extra, the experience is linear: there will always be arrows or signs that tell us where to go at all times or tell us the remaining meters until the next objective. And speaking of scenarios, he has left me a contrast not satisfactory to come across some full of animated objects while others are terribly bland, lacking in detail or even somewhat inert.

It is clearly evident that Strider It is not a game that on a graphic or technical level can even be considered remarkable. The modeling is some too simple, the texturing could be richer or we even have some gruesome video scenes with a technical treatment that can cause an eye bleed. It is necessary to warn of two important things at this point in the analysis: old gen versions they run to 30 fps, while those of New Generation they do it to 60, and honestly, in a game of this style it is quite noticeable, so, if possible, buy the higher versions. The other note is regarding that there is no cross buy in this game, that is, if for example we acquire the version of PS3, we will not have access to the PS4.

Another negative point is borne by the out-of-school care: It always goes extremely unnoticed and lacks the least interesting piece, not just for quality, but rather to adequately accompany the action - it is absurd to listen to a melody that seems to be taken from an elevator or the dentist's waiting room while we beat the copper with a giant mechanical dragon. Regarding the duration, the game in its campaign mode can last you a few 5 hoursAlthough it depends on how you handle the difficulty. When you finish the story mode, you have other two of challenges: one of stunts going through scenarios in the shortest time possible and another that comes to be the classic survival. All this for $15.

You already know that in Mundi Videogames We strive to make our reviews as honest as possible, and this is not going to be the exception: I was looking forward to this return -although in my fantasies it was rather with a production at the level of DmC- but after passing the game through my hands, I would say that we have both been victims of hype. Double helix games It is not among the most cutting-edge studies in the industry, as we all know, and this work with Strider It is not going to remove that label: the control has not convinced me, nor a questionable technical section, the 30 fps in PS3 y Xbox 360 they are a crime, a somewhat monotonous development… it can provide you with entertaining sessions, but in me it has been unable to awaken the ecstasy that I expected with the return of this longed-for character.

FINAL NOTE MUNDI VJ 6.5
