The number of Facebook affected by the Cambridge Analytica scandal rises to 87 million

In these last two weeks, the guys from Facebook, especially Mark Zuckerberg, head of the social network, has been facing one of the biggest image crisis of the company practically since its creation. Some large companies like Tesla or PlayBoy have joined the #DeleteFacebook movement and have completely abandoned the social network.

The Cambridge Analytica company, had access through a survey on Facebook to more than 50 million user profiles on Facebook, at least it is what was initially believed, since the social network has confirmed that this information leak affected 37 million more users, so that the total number of affected users rises to 87 million. But the figure may not stop there.

Cambridge Analytica, is an analysis company hired, among many others, by Donald Trump to win the 2016 American elections. Analytica was dedicated to making false publications targeting users who had information about their profiles, to influence their voting decision. This company was also involved in the United Kingdom's vote on its stay in the European Union, Brexit, and it is rumored that it may also have influenced other important political events.

To try to wash his image a bit, the social network just deactivate the search function that allowed us to find other users through a telephone number or an email, some options that could already be deactivated in the configuration of the social network, but which were enabled by default. It has also added restrictions on the API with which companies can access user data, but not only on Facebook but also on Instagram.

Starting April 9, Facebook will inform all users whose data was shared by Cambridge Analytica in addition to including a link to Facebook's configuration options for check both the information that is shared and the applications that have access currently to our data, applications that we have previously authorized, either to make use of an application or a web service.
