The web (WWW) is celebrating: it turns 30

World Wide Web

If you have used Google throughout today, you have probably seen the new doodle that the company has created. In it you want to celebrate a moment of great importance. Since 30 years have passed since the Web was created. It was the British Sir Tim Berners-Lee who had the idea of the World Wide Web (WWW).

Although the doodle that Google has used in its Spanish version is wrong. Since in it the birth of the Internet is celebrated. But what we are celebrating in this case is the birth of the web. Although they are two concepts that are closely linked, as you already know.

Since although the web is an essential part of the Internet today, neither the WWW is the Internet, nor vice versa. A common mistake, but one that shows the enormous link that these two concepts have today for most users, including those on Google. Below we will tell you more about the birth of it, in addition to the development it has experienced over the years. In this way, we can learn more about it.

How the World Wide Web (WWW) was born

Tim Berners-Lee is the great responsible behind the World Wide Web. While working at CERN, he started working on the so-called Information Management: A Proposal. This proposal, launched in 1989, was the definitive step in this regard. In it we find issues that undoubtedly constitute the foundation of what we know today as WWW.

One of the questions I raised is that all the information stored in computers in the world was linked. In addition, that there was the possibility of programming the computer, so that a space was created in everything, it was linked to everything. These issues are what prompted your proposal. This first proposal was already a revolution. Although the British continued working on it for a while longer, about 12 more months.

As in November 1990 a more formal proposal was already presented. In this case, it was published with Robert Cailliau. In it you could find the definition of the development of a hypertext project. That project was WorldWideWeb, which was used in a single word at the time. It would be a network of hypertext documents. They could be seen thanks to browsers, which were going to make use of a client-server architecture.

Furthermore, at the same time other important components were in full development. The first web server was already under development and was due to arrive shortly after. Also the HTTP protocol or the HTML language were being developed at that time. Nor can we forget that in December 1990 the first web page was launched. The first step in the revolution had already been taken. It was a modest website, but it worked.

From this moment on, we have been able to see the development that has taken place in this field. A growth that has been closely linked to the development and growth of the Internet. Therefore, on many occasions we can see that the terms World Wide Web and Internet are confused, as in the aforementioned Google doodle.

The advancement of the World Wide Web

The first website, which was launched coinciding with Christmas 1990, was precisely a website in which I wanted to offer more information about this WWW project. So that you could know more about it and the development plans that were had in this field.

In this way, WWW became the program that allowed the use of the Internet. Since the Internet infrastructure was something that already existed, his birth dates from the late 60s, when Leonard Kleinrock sent the first message through ARPANET. Therefore, Tim Berners-Lee managed to overcome the operational problems that this network had to make it work. From this moment on, developments were very fast.

In April 1993 CERN decided that the World Wide Web should be in the public domain. At the time, when these statements were made, there were about 500 known servers running. Although in just one year this figure went from a total of 10.000. Of this figure, about 2.000 were already destined for commercial uses. At that time, in addition, it is estimated that the number of users with access was around 10.000 worldwide. By comparison, it is currently more than half of the world's population that has access.

Therefore, This important moment is celebrated on March 12. The web as we know it made its entry into history at this time. In these 30 years it has had an enormous development, with many changes and improvements, until it is what we know today. So it's a good day to celebrate this. Did you know that today was the 30th anniversary of the web?
