ThrottleStop is a small tool for Windows that can help us to quickly program the computer and its processor, depending on the work we do on a daily basis.
The weight of this tool is extremely small, which compared to the functionalities that it would offer us when it comes to use the maximum or minimum power of the cores of a processor, it is practically something impressive. With small tricks to adopt, we will have the possibility of carrying out different tests of each of these cores and later, knowing how to configure the tool so that the processors work according to each daily activity that we carry out.
Looking for the right profile of the processors in our computer
First of all, it is worth mentioning that ThrottleStop is a tool dedicated specifically for Windows laptops (according to the developer), although it may well be used on desktop computers. Once we download this small tool (which is portable) in its first execution we will find a first analysis of what is happening with our processor.
Towards the right side is an area that it will describe the work of our processor, where the current temperature of the same will be displayed, the maximum that it has reached, the use of each core among a few other characteristics. The most interesting of all is to the left, a place where you can see four small circles that come to be the profiles that we could be using depending on each activity we carry out; This means that if we choose the correct one we could:
- Work at maximum power
- When we play on the computer
- With exclusive use of the Internet
- Optimized work when the computer only has the battery
According to the ThrottleStop developer, this means that if at a certain moment we are going to require work with the maximum power of the cores a processor, we must choose the first option; if this were the case, the author's recommendation is that the computer should be connected to a direct power outlet.
An almost similar situation could arise when using the computer for games, since some of these entertainment applications require too many Windows resources and therefore, a greater amount of energy connected to the computer.
We could find a little less restrictive in the third situation, that is, when our computer is exclusively dedicated to Internet browsing, having to choose the third option.
If you are working with your laptop and only with the battery in it, then you could select the fourth option, where the application will optimize the maximum of resources for the processors to work properly well.
At the bottom of ThrottleStop you will find a button that says «T.S. Bench«, Which will help us to monitor the work of the cores of this processor; At the top we have placed a small screenshot, where previously a quick test with 32 MB was carried out and where there was no type of error. For the second test (where 1024 MB was used), 3 errors were recorded.
The button that follows (options) can be used to create a new profile according to what we consider necessary on the computer. If we want to work with any of the profiles shown in ThrottleStop, we only have to select any of them and then the button in the lower right that says Turn On.
The same button will become «Turn Off», which we should select when we no longer want to work with said configuration. The developer of this tool mentions that some of the features must be configured with great care since altering some of them could cause the processor to work with too high a temperature and therefore damage the computer.
In any case, if you know the real speed of your processor you can monitor the process in the upper right part where, the speed at which it is working is clearly shown according to the profile configuration you have chosen as indicated above.
