We take an in-depth look at the new Samsung Galaxy S20 5G

Samsung recently launched the triple range Galaxy S20, thus we had the new Galaxy S20 5G, the Galaxy S20 Pro and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. These are the terminals with which Samsung wants to continue being one of the main alternatives to the high-end Android smartphone market. This time we have received the Galaxy S20 5G and we have tested it so that you can know in depth all the details of this compact terminal with an extraordinary design. Stay with us and discover the in-depth analysis of the new Samsung Galaxy S20 5G and everything that it can offer you, in addition, we tested its triple camera.

Design and materials: Samsung's watchword

We have a terminal that is an interesting change from the previous model. As you may have seen, it is a little less wide and taller, that is, the screen is now ultra-wide with a ratio of 20: 9 and from my point it is an interesting success. Therefore, we are left with measures of 151,7 x 69,1 x 7,9mm.

  • Size: 151,7 69,1 x x 7,9mm
  • Weight: 163 grams
  • Screen protector included in the device

Weight and ergonomics have a lot to do with here, where Samsung has shown itself to do a good job. TWe have 163 grams that feel light, especially thanks to the double curve (rear and front). As expected we have polished metal for the edges, all the buttons on the right side and a single USB-C port on the back, we finally lack a 3,5mm Jack.

Power and connectivity: We do not lack anything

At a technical level we have the Exynos 990 manufactured by Samsung in 7nm which theoretically offers low power consumption. They accompany you in the tested unit 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage expandable via microSD card (dualSIM mechanism). All this runs with Android 10 under the OneUI customization layer that moves smoothly. We have been able to check the performance with the highest quality of games like PUBG and we have not found any reluctance or drop in FPS, definitely at the power level this Galaxy S20 5G has no barriers.

Samsung has fully opted for connectivity and proves it with the 5G technology included as standard even in the entry model. But not everything stays that way, we have a connection WiFi 6 MIMO 4 × 4 and LTE category 20, definitely this Galaxy S20 will be able to take advantage of the latest technology in telecommunications and wireless connection. WiFi and LTE performance has been favorable in our tests, with no connection losses and a remarkable range. We cannot say the same about 5G, since our telephone company does not support the aforementioned technology, so the tests could not be completed.

Camera tests

In the back we find the camera module, where we have:

  • Ultra Wide Angle: 12MP 1,4nm and f / 2.2
  • Angular: 12MP 1,8nm and f / 1.8 with OIS
  • Telephoto: 64MP, 0,8nm and f / 2.0 with OIS
  • Zoom: Hybrid optical up to 3x and digital up to 30x

We lack a ToF sensor, which is available in the two major versions of the device, we leave you some tests of the photographs taken:

We can see how the photographs with the main sensor se are taken as standard at a resolution lower than 64MP Although we can choose the shot in this category, yes, we will renounce the 16: 9 format. Daytime photography contrasts well, chooses colors well, and stands out against backlighting. Image quality declines with falling daylight, especially with 12MP sensors (Wide Angle and Angular), although Samsung to date was a champion of night mode, we find that it defends itself well indoors, but suffers when facing certain artificial lighting. At the time of recording we have the option to choose 8K resolution (about 600MB per minute), but by default we are activated the FullHD resolution that offers a satisfactory stabilization, also the 8K does not allow us to exceed 24 FPS of recording.

As for the front camera we have a favorable result with the 10MP of its camera, in addition to the option of allowing a standard portrait or opting for an angular image where more content fits. It offers a series of filters and customizations that continue to cause a sensation among the youngest.

As for the application, Samsung continues to know how to satisfy the most demanding public and the most casual with it. It is easy to use and the transitions between different sensors have a very nice animation, Thus, the application remains one of the best native alternatives when it comes to capturing photography and video.

Multimedia section: Outstanding screen and sound

If there is something that Samsung is particularly good at, it is precisely to advocate for high-quality panels, which is why most high-end manufacturers opt for them. As it is, we find a generous panel of 6,2 inches Dynamic Amoled that offers a QHD + resolution and up to 120 Hz refresh rate.

Unfortunately we have to opt for the highest resolution (QHD +) or the highest refresh rate (120 Hz) since both settings cannot be used simultaneously. In our case, we have definitely opted for the FHD + resolution and the 120 Hz refresh rate for everyday use. However, we found a good adjustment of the contrast and saturation of the colors, as well as a good brightness that makes it pleasant to use outdoors, with very pure blacks. We have a 20: 9 format that allows us to consume content in a pleasant way, the compact freckle where the selfie camera is located and ultra-small frames, like the famous "curve" on the sides, which has been slightly reduced and seems to me one of the greatest successes of this generation, chromatic aberrations disappear almost completely.

As for the sound, we have a speaker at the bottom and a speaker behind the screen at the top, both at the same time offer a kind of stereo sound that is enough to consume content, we did not find aberrations or canning even at high volumes. Samsung continues to throw the rest in this section and it is undoubtedly one of the most favorable aspects that we have found during the tests of the terminal.

Autonomy and fingerprint sensor on the screen

We start with autonomy, we have 4.000 mAh and fast charging of up to 25W through the USB-C port, while we can also have cfast Qi wireless charging up to 15W. The battery is undoubtedly one of the points that raises the most doubts and We have not been able to squeeze more than 4h30m of screen on with mixed use. It is enough for daily use, but we miss a more powerful fast charge or a little more autonomy. Despite this, the battery has grown compared to the previous model.

At the biometric unlocking level, Samsung once again opts for the fingerprint sensor on the screen and for facial recognition through the selfie camera. We have facial recognition that does not usually fail, it is well located and has given us the feeling of being safe. However, once again Samsung forces the unlock animation which could be slightly faster to give a more fluid feel. As for facial recognition, it defends itself in most situations and is even faster than the fingerprint sensor on some occasions.

Editor's opinion

I start my summary with the good: I liked the quality of the finishes and the successful format of the terminal, comfortable, compact and light. It is positioned as my perfect alternative in terms of portability. I also liked the multimedia section, where Samsung usually stands out above all its rivals, with a very high quality screen and sound to match.

Pros

  • An ergonomic and perfect design with quality materials
  • State-of-the-art power and connectivity, nothing is missing
  • An outstanding multimedia section on screen and sound

On the other hand, The camera has left me cold, from which I expected something more considering the price of the terminal. I also didn't like the software limitations like having to choose between FHD 120Hz or QHD + 60Hz.

Cons

  • Autonomy can suffer with intensive use
  • Software limitations regarding screen refresh
  • The camera is still one of the best, but I expected something more

We are facing one of the best terminals on the market today, which you can buy from 1009 euros on its official website or trusted sites such as Amazon.
