Windows 10 will also support the HEIF format of photos

The launch of iOS 11 was the starting point for the rest of the operating services to decide, once and for all, to support HEIF photo system, a format that halves their size while maintaining quality. To this day, there is no application that allows us to view photos captured in this format in Windows 10.

At least until the fall, when the next Windows 10 update, will offer us compatibility natively with this format, more or less on the same date as the next version of Android P, the next version of Android, which has also announced support for this format.

It will be through the native Photos application, through which we will be able to play all the images in that format, an image processing format that uses HEVC technology to compress images and thus consume half of the space currently occupied by a file in JPEG format, all without losing quality at any time, beyond what is natively it already loses this format when converting an image.

For now, we are going to have to settle for just being able to view the images, since we will not be able to edit the photos. Taking into account that something is starting, we just have to wait for future updates to be able to make more options with this format. For now, the only smartphones compatible with this format that allow reading it in addition to allowing captures in this format are from the iPhone 7 onwards with iOS 11 inside.

The arrival of this format, supposes an important saving in the space of our device, whether mobile or desktop, in addition to allowing us to reduce a large amount of data from our rate. This announcement has been made by some of the top people in charge of the development of Windows 10 on the official blog of the company a few days ago.
