How to move a Windows 7 hard drive to another computer without crashing

switch hard disc with Windiws 7

If you have a personal computer with Windows 7 as the default operating system and you want to move this hard drive to a completely different computer, if you do not adopt a certain number of tricks you could be receiving the typical «blue screen" due to a lack of compatibility between the new computer and the drivers installed on that version of the operating system.

By adopting a few tricks that we will mention below, we will have the possibility of being able to remove the hard drive with Windows 7 and move it to another computer completely different, where it will work well (with a few limitations) and without having to give a solution to this «blue screen» that usually appears when these types of tasks are performed.

Disable general driver from source computer

The source computer to which we have referred is the one that has the hard disk with Windows 7 installed and that we want to move to a completely different team. We are going to mention a series of sequential steps that you must follow in this operating system, something that can also be applicable for the old Windows XP operating system if you want to perform the same type of tasks:

  • Click the Windows 7 Start Menu Button.
  • Go to your «Control Panel».
  • Now select "System and Security".
  • On the right side look at "System" and then select the "Device Manager" option.

ATA driver in Windows 7

It is worth mentioning that you could have reached this same place if you looked for the "My Computer" icon (not its shortcut) and then right-clicked to select "properties" from the context menu. Outside of all this, once you have all the devices in view in the window you can go to the ATA controllers area, being able to find something very similar to what we will show in the next screen.

In our case we have found an Intel controller, although one of the Via type could also be present; at the same you have to select and choose the option that will help you «update your driver«. From the new window that appears you will have to choose the option that will allow you to search a local hard drive (not in the update center on the web).

Immediately a small list will appear, from which you have to choose the one considered as standard (according to the image that we will place below).

When you have finished with this step, you can close the windows accepting the changes and turn off the computer, having to go later to the second part of our process and where we will use the LiveCD tool called "Hiren's Boot CD".

Using "Hiren's Boot CD" to update driver

After you have shut down your computer as suggested above, you will have to remove the hard drive and place it in the other computer; When you're ready, insert the CD-ROM into your LiveCD version of Hiren's Boot CD and start with it (making the respective modifications in the BIOS). When the "boot" options appear, you must choose the one that refers to a minimalist version of the operating system, something that may well be a "windows xp mini«.

When this operating system finishes running you will have to click on the icon in the lower right part according to the screenshot that we have placed in the upper part and later, choose the function that says from the context menu "Registry ->" Fix hard disk controller (fix_hdc.cmd) ".

Immediately a command terminal window will open with only three options, which you can see at the top. In the first instance, you have to press the letter "T" to enter the folder "C: Windows", something that in this tool is called "TargetRoot". Later you have to press the «M» key, which instead will update the driver according to what "Hiren's Boot CD" have scanned in the BIOS of this new computer. When all the changes are made, you can turn off the computer and restart it in the conventional way, there should not be any problems if the procedure has been carried out as we have mentioned.
